I wonder if Foran and DCE are waiting to see what the other one does first as they don't want to be stuck at Manly as the only recognised half,

Surely he is off to the Warriors.

He will be a great signing for them if so. A bloke who works hard in the pack is just what they need ala Price or Campion.

You could be right.

But I suspect they would speak about what's going on with each other.

I think if one stays they won't be playing with a dud. The Eagles will pick up a pretty handy replacement with the free $1.1 million in the kitty.

I think if one is left at Manly, DCE is better served as Foran is is more replaceable (as great a player as he is)

Would be quite surprised tbh, but wouldn't turn him down. Is the type of player the Warriors need in the middle of the field.

Surprise? Really?

I thought they'd put in a big offer and were pretty confident?

I think if he signs for you guys its a perfect fit for both.

I hope he does actually. I think the Warriors play their best footy when they have a "doer" in the pack.

I think Merrin will shine over there too.

Getting players to move to NZ is not an easy thing to do. It's always a surprise when a quality player makes the move. I doubt Merrin wants to move to NZ if he has options in Sydney, and it looks like the Panthers are making a play for him (ironically they can do that after Matulino re-signed with the Warriors when the Panthers were quietly confident of getting him).

Agree with what you say though, he would be a perfect fit, but I just don't see it happening.

I suppose he does have the issue of that stunner he's latched onto.....

Penrith have emerged as favourites for the signature of representative forward Trent Merrin.
Fairfax Media can reveal the Panthers have identified Merrin as a priority signing and are preparing a lucrative offer in a blow to the chances of him becoming a one-club man.
The club already has a formidable pack that laid the foundations for a top-four finish last year. However, there is expected to be some turnover, with a raft of forwards coming off contract including Adam Docker, Tyrone Peachey, Brent Kite, Nigel Plum, Lewis Brown, Jeremy Latimore and Ben Murdoch-Masila.

The addition of Merrin is seen as the ingredient required to help the Panthers take the next step towards premiership success. Kite, soon to be 34, will probably retire at the end of the season in a move that would free up money to chase Merrin.
The Panthers had been chasing Ben Matulino and hoped coach Ivan Cleary's relationship from his Warriors days would help. But after Matulino re-signed with the New Zealand side until the end of 2017, Cleary has redirected his focus and funds towards Merrin.

St George Illawarra are keen to retain him but have salary cap issues that prevent them from competing on an even financial footing with other suitors. Complicating matters, it is unclear when new recruit Russell Packer will be registered to play after being released from jail following a stint for assault.

The Dragons are not prepared to budge from their initial offer to Merrin, which his manager, Wayne Beavis, described last year as "not in the spirit of negotiations". There have been subsequent meetings between the parties but no progress has been made.
Several rivals, including the Roosters and Warriors, have expressed interest, with the offer to cross the Tasman particularly lucrative. However, Merrin's preference is to remain in Wollongong, where he was born and still lives.

The Shellharbour Sharks junior has made 107 appearances for the Red V since making his debut, including a premiership victory under Wayne Bennett in 2010. But the Dragons are making contingency plans in case he leaves and are looking to bolster their front-row stocks. The joint-venture's powerbrokers are in negotiations with Canterbury's international prop, Sam Kasiano, though he will probably remain at Belmore.
Merrin, who has played 10 games for NSW, is in a relationship with surfing champion Sally Fitzgibbons. Signing with the Panthers would allow him to remain in Wollongong, though he would face a long commute to training.

Merrin would have made his Kangaroos debut in the Four Nations if not for a shoulder injury. It is the second consecutive season that injury ended his Test chances, after a knee problem ended his hopes of a start in the World Cup. However, Merrin will add another representative jersey to his collection when he comes off the bench for the All Stars clash this Friday.

Hope we aren't offering more then the Dragons did. He's not worth what he thinks he is, and if the club that signs him does so by outbidding them then they have paid overs.

If he is willing to sign for reasonable money with a club because he believes he and they can be successful, then he could be a great signing. But his refusal of the Dragons biggest ever offer to a forward has me thinking he is only interested in the money.

Either that or he's just not interested in staying with the Dragons regardless of what they offer.

For what it's worth a very reliable Warriors poster said that the Panthers/Dragons both offered Matulino a contract but it was just under or the same as what he was already earning at the Warriors. The Warriors as a result didn't have to upgrade him as much as they initially thought they would.

If the Panthers only offered Matulino what he was already on and he was their main target it just makes zero sense for them to turn around and offer Merrin overs.

I doubt Gus would pay overs for a forward, but if he's the only decent option and we need him then maybe he would be willing to pay a bit more then he normally would. I just have a hard time believing he will sign on a reasonable contract.

If its a simple matter of giving him the money Kite and Plum were on, its a no brainer. One guy in his prime for 2 guys well past theirs. Hell the only off contract forwards I would like to keep are Tyrone Peachey and Jeremy Latimore. Latimore as he is solid and cheap, Peachey as he is a freakish talent. We could easily justify losing Kite, Plum, Brown, Docker, BMM etc. With our depth if we sign a genuine top 17 player and fringe rep player.

Yes Merrin would be a perfect for us, doubt he will join us though because of his partner, would be stoked if he did though.

Yeah, but the cap really doesn't work like that. Losing Plum and Kite - you still need to pay 2 people in the top 25 to replace them - even if one is on minimum wage.

Same argument if you try to replace 4 blokes with 2. You can't just get rid of all your shit players and sign a rep player or 2 to replace them unless you're the Bulldogs, Roosters or Broncos.

I would steer clear of Merrin at this point, anyway... his ego is clearly bigger than his ability at this point. The money he wants is fairly unreasonable.

I think he's ok, might be the new manager who's steering all the hype in the media.
