https://au.sports.yahoo.com/league/...ish-high-school-put-haynes-nfl-dream-on-hold/

Dropping out of high school cost Jarryd Hayne the chance to become an NFL player three years ago.

Set to announce that he’s secured a rookie contract with an NFL club – believed to be Detroit – on Friday, Hayne has revealed he initially planned to quit the NRL in 2011 and make his way into the NFL from America’s hugely popular collegiate system.

In an exclusive interview with Seven News, to be broadcast tonight, the 27-year-old admitted his failure to finish Year 12 put the dream on the back burner for three seasons.

“Originally I wanted to go when I was 24 and the thing that held me back was that I didn’t finish high school, so I didn’t have any certificates to go to college,” he told Seven News.

“If I had’ve I would’ve went through college and went into the draft.”

Hayne also revealed he’d led a double life from then onwards, secretly training with a part-time Gridiron team before gathering the courage to finally pursue his dream last October.

Without a manager, training regime or even accommodation when he arrived in Los Angles, Hayne attracted scouts from a dozen NFL franchises to watch him audition for a contract on 5 December.

He did enough to secure a week-to-week practice contract five days later, but Visa restrictions prevented him from accepting it and forced him to return to Australia shortly before Christmas.

But before heading home, Hayne visited the three clubs most interested in his services – Seattle, San Fransisco and Detroit.

All three have rookie contracts on the table and Hayne said he would chose the one that offers the most security over the next year.

Hayne told Seven News: “It’s a ruthless business, the NFL, and they can chop and change whenever they want. From my point of view I’m just trying to get a bit of guaranteed money so we know we are going to be there for at least 12 months.”

The two-time Dally M medallist says he has no fixed goals, but won’t be satisfied with playing one game.

Asked about returning to rugby league, Hayne said his heart would always be with Parramatta – something he demonstrated in 2013 when the Bulldogs tried to steal him.

“I did get an offer (from the Bulldogs),” Hayne said.

“For me, I’ve been playing against the Bulldogs my whole life, I had been playing against the Bulldogs since I was 14, they've always been a rival."

“For me it’s obviously about loyalty, I’ve been at Parramatta my whole life, I would never do that. The only way I would ever do that is if Parramatta didn’t want me.”

I wonder if Parra fans question his commitment to the club, given he had the intention of leaving the NRL as far back as 2011.

so you're suggesting the 2014 dally m winner wasn't putting in because he wanted to try NFL back in 2011.

I'd really like to see him succeed, but he seems to be changing his story as it develops. Even his time wasn't 100% accurate. He wasn't at the NFL Combine & quoted his time at 4.5, when it was 4.53. Ok, that mightn't sound much - but when trying to make it in the NFL, every fraction of a second is vital.

He has so far to go, but still some people in the media are making it sound as though he is just about to announce a playing contract that will guarantee him playing time in the NFl. Wrong ! - it is only a futures contract. These are signed by fringe players trying to make the final 53 man playing roster. The team can have up to 90 players competing for these spots. He can be cut at anytime.

Yes it's good to be positive about this story, but let's keep it accurate.

Just goes to show you how much more intelligent you need to be to play American Football - as opposed to League, the simple man's game.

The man has never played a down of competitive college or NFL football and he wants guaranteed money?
Get off the f**king air, pal.

There are blokes in that league who have worked all their lives, playing from pop warner, right through High School, College and years of NFL experience and they dont get guaranteed money

Surely that comment was taken out of context...

Guaranteed money???

Wow....

I was thinking the fans here were a bit naive and delusional about this...

But i thought he actually knew enough about the league to know where he stands...

Isn't there a minimum wage in the NFL even for practice squad players?

Yep, a reality check needed - seems like he & his "team" are trying to avoid being rejected & returning to Australia as failures who couldn't last more than a few months. As you say he cannot make up for the lack of experience playing the game by "learning" in a few months to fast track his way to success.

I am a big fan of his rugby league talent, but with his NFL dream, he can't take short cuts & jump in the elevator rather than climbing the stairs. If he is really serious, he will be patient & not just want the glory without plenty of hardship. Those battles will be physical & mental - he has already admitted to being homesick. It will only increase as he strives for a spot on the roster against others, the majority of whom have been aiming for this opportunity for over 10 years.

There won't be a team mate or coach to pat him on the back when he makes a mistake, it'll be a case of toughen up or give up.

Good luck to him I hope he can get on the field on special teams kick defence or something and then go from there. I wonder if the NFL deal matches how much the dogs offered him to go to Belmore

The NFL dont stucture their contracts like most leagues. Most contracts have a value but they protect themselves by only guaranteeing some of that money. Hayne is essentially looking to pick up a contract as an UDFA, and the vast majority of Undrafted Free Agents get no guaranteed money, which means they get paid whilst ever they are still with the team but they can be cut at any moment for any reason without the team needing to pay their contract out.

The top UDFA get a small signing bonus but still no guaranteed money

Damn right. NFL players are geniuses:

"It's a humbling thing being humble."
"Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein."
"I've been big ever since I was little."
"I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first.?

I like NFL but some of you fanboys are embarrassing, as is the tall poppy syndrome and smug knowitallism of some of you.
