Reynolds was inline for origin - Sutton was talked about as well.....Id say above average halves. Not great but certainly not average.

Yet, weren't mentioned this year when their forward pack struggled.

Forwards make halves look good. Look at Cherry / Foran this year, they really struggled at times behind their weak pack.

And yet Daley chose Hodkinson, Jeynolds and Pearce in front of him. Luke Keary was chosen in the halves when he was available in 2014 over Sutton. Aeynolds has a fantastic kicking game but the rest of his game as a half is bog average and Keary has nothing, below average halves that look good behind a fantastic forward pack.

Agree but bad example, Foran and DCE were two of their best players with Stewart. For me. Forwards win you game through out the year but halves win you tight games and they decide GFs. Foran and Norman as individuals would be in the top 4 halves combos in the comp (cronk/green, hunt/milford, Thurston/Morgan) they are just an unknown as a combo and Foran on the RHS

Well said. A Reynolds was a lot further from origin selection than the media made out.

The original point was that you can't win a comp with average halves. You can if you have the right system and the forward pack to do so.

Agreed. I think a point that is missed though is that you need certain skills in your team to be consistently competitive. One of those is a great kicking game, and another is defensively competent halves - Souths had both of those. You also need playmaking in the spine, and Souths had that in Inglis and Luke.

And of course everything is easier when your pack wins in the middle.

You need a good pack to compete, full stop. In previous years forwards were more important because they slowed the ruck big time and allowed the halves little room to shine raking away from attacking players like Thurston. Last season i think there was a significant change and ruck speed increased. This give the halves more time and the gap in quality between halves becomes more Noticeable. Also backs with speed amd fancy footwork become more Important compared to big strong slower backs (i.e rts v Inglis). I think this has as big an impact on souths stuggling as burgess leaving.

Yeah the game has been dubbed the Pub Game. Get ppl watching at the pubs and clubs early. If it happen it would take some time to get use to that time slot.

Just received word and probably the strongest rumour I've heard in a while that Hayne will be turning out for the chooks next year - I'm sure the NRL will be pleased with themselves

Stagger is there any bad blood between the Eels and Hayne? I thought he would want to return to Parra. Ah well it should raise rooster membership by 12 people.

Oh well, I look forward to the press conference where he explains the 'life time contract' comment.

Good luck to him.
