Ok, now you are justified i your pessimism...

Hopefully it is just a section that hasnt had coverage.

Not pessimism, realism. I've been following the nrl's dithering on expansion since 2008, I didn't expect anything more than we ended up with, nothing.

Well he entered the job full of bluster about the need for expansion and probable Sydney rationalisation so you be the judge!

Feb 2015: The NRL season should be cut by at least four rounds and new teams from Perth, South-East Queensland and New Zealand added to the competition, according to new NRL Head of Strategy Shane Richardson.
The former Souths CEO also said there was no guarantee all nine Sydney clubs would survive under his vision for the game.

Dec 2015: THE man who picked rugby league apart and put it back together again for a strategic review believes there should be no NRL expansion for at least three years.

There is not one stake holder in the game that wants expansion;

ARLC - forever paying lip service to the concept of expansion to keep Ipswich and the Brisbane Bombers on the hook ( they don't give the slightest f**k about Perth) but when push comes to shove, any expansion decision is always put off for three years or until the next TV deal,

The Clubs- they will have to be bought kicking and screaming to any expansion agreement as they just see "their" dollars being divided by 18 instead of 16. The Broncos will do everything they can to keep the greater Brisbane area to themselves.

Fox & Nine- Fox never say anything about it, and Gyngell only ever supported the addition of a new Brisbane team to have Brisbane games Thursday and Friday nights...to be honest, you can't say the Perth market is demanding expansion when only 6,000 or so tune into live games on FTA most Friday evenings..

So if no one wants Expansion, then how can it possibly happen?

What a soft c**k. No expansion? What a joke. The head body should not be listening to clubs and their selfish attitudes on these matters. Of course they don't want expansion, since when have clubs done anything for the greater good of the game as the first and main motivation?

The NRL sucks!!! Seriously what a disgrace. Losers!!!

It aint just the clubs though - no party wants expansion.

What's the reason? I can only assume that no one thinks there is any money to be made...

They could be really co servative with expansion and just put a team in central qld and brisbane and it would be a roading success if they were so worried about it not.making money.

Its just greed, the sydney clubs dont want to lose the ability to attract young queensland and NZ players. If they had a parheay straight to the nrl in there home region say brisbane 2 and nz 2 then less players available for Sydney. Plus the broncos want to maintain there monoply and dominance in SEQ

Its a farce and needes to strong leadership from the commission and NRL management but instead we get this piss weak 2nd tier expansion that will put 36 players on the books of each club.

Yeah.. agreed, but lets reiterate that its not just the Sydney clubs -the Broncos are the biggest impediment to a 2nd Brisbane team, and we dont see the Storm, Cowboys or Warriors actively promoting expansion do we?

I don't get why Fox say nothing either... surely there must be a benefit in trying to capture a percentage of 2 million people in WA in the longer term?

Perhaps all the parties have looked at the expansion track record of all the codes over the past 20 years...

NRL - Titans... say no more
Union - expansion to Melbourne and Perth has been a terrible failure
AFL - Suns & GWS are money pits on the profitable clubs and the game
Soccer - Wanderers have been a success ( they should have been there from the start)... On the other side of the coin, Nth QLd and Gold Coast lasted about 2 years...

I think it is more that no one thinks there is any short term quick money to be made. No body is interested in doing the hard work for future pay offs

Yeah probably more accurate....

Second Brisbane team though seems a no brainer and would get more TV money from Day 1 out of Nine...

Even if they just did this and had 17 teams it would be something...

Haha is it any surprise, honestly the Central Coast Bears should've been admitted back in 2005 before the Gold Coast Titans, then in 2011 things looked highly promising until expansion was put on the back burner until 2014 and the new tv rights deal.
Now the CCBears are all but dead, other expansion bids have gotten stronger and again expansion is put on the back burner.
This will never happen while existing NRL clubs have a say, everybody has their own agenda, we could have a new tv rights deal in 10 years time and clubs will still be on the brink with their hands out.
The NRL need to stop helping these poorly managed clubs and make them self accountable.

WA Union jnrs have tripled since the force started up. the govt has built the waru a $10mill training h.q. Crowds have avg 14-20k. Union has a much higher profile in Perth now than NRL. Considering how dire the force have been on the field they have sadly achieved far far more than the NRL in the last decade in wa. Not sure why you consider it a disaster?

They averaged 26K their first year and this has declined each year to around 12k.

You would be hard pressed to find a bigger drop off in any sport in the country..

If NRL couldn't beat that than lets not bother with a team over there...

And the Rebels in Vickyland(where union has been around for nearly 100 years) ,nearly brought down the ARU ,as they financially had to underpin them.
Expansion can be beneficial at times ,other times can be fraught with problems if not carefully planned to the detriment of the remaining clubs.
