logically it does make sense for Widdop to be 7 and Barge Ass to be 6 given their styles of play and strengths/weaknesses, however given the modern game where basically one half controls the left side corridor of the field and one half controls the right side corridor of the field will swapping them around make much difference?
i think the overall problem is a lack of game plan and strategy so both players know when they should be calling the ball or controlling play.
they seem to simply get in each others way and are confused when they should take control rather than compliment each other..

I think that's part of our problem.

Benji and Widdop usually patrol opposite sides of the field, so in a way they are both halfbacks and direct our attack depending on which side of the field the play is going. This is the case as we don't have a dominant playmaker.

The better halves combinations actually try and combine. And the best 7's like Thurston, Cronk and Hunt will always be first receiver and the 6 will pop up when required. Like Morgan trailing Granville every time he ran, or Milford looming up when Roberts made a break.

Our halves don't play this way.

After last nights 'effort' wonder if Coote would really consider signing with us anyway? This QLD road trip will come back to bite us, F/A already 3rd worst after just 5 rounds and lack of tries means any slim chance of making the 8 gets even harder..
I really don't understand how a team training 4 months on attacking plays has not shown 1 single set move so far, no bodies in motion, no decoy runners, no crisp ball movement out to the edge players. This false sense of security relying just on our "D" is stupid, by the time we may have have a chance, we can't get over the line anyway, and our guys are stuffed mentally and physically....

My view is that Dragons could be looking at Cronk/ Coote combination - yes it will cost $1.4m a season but I can see them releasing WIDDOP and Marshall .. I've seen weirder things happen but the halves and lack of direction are our problem..along w a clueless coach.

Totally agree - coaching has been unable to train or coach this very above average roster.. So far MARY has failed..

Why make widdop our captain if he isn't our long term half? For what it's worth, he seems to go ok with a 7 next to him who has a decent kicking game. When he played with Witt in 2014 and McCrone last 2 weeks, Widdop was ok.

I feel sorry for Marshall, clearly he is buggered mentally. No one wants to sign him. He said that this year he would need to play good footy to get another deal, obviously the pressure has gotten to him.

He just doesn't understand that less is more. All we need marshall to do is kick and kick well. He just doesn't get it. He can't beat the first line of defence anymore by running sideways, he is not 20 anymore he is 31. He needs to go and watch some video of how Lockyer changed his style of play as he got older.

Holmes isnt that quick though, was getting swallowed up last night, but he has some exceptional skills to accomodate..

Id just love to have atleast 1 genuinely quick bloke to support the others, Glymin might do it if he wasnt continually injured.

Holmes is very quick mate and has the potiental to be anything at fullback. Dragons must sign him.

This is why I posted a few weeks ago saying I can't believe people were cheering and happy about our performances v Souths and Penrith. That much ball with every single call going our way and only managing two point victories both times.

Lachlan Coote was last seen closing his St George Bank savings account.

If he has any brains at all he will sit tight and if the Cowboys win the comp again as i suspect they will he can write his own ticket.

Why not give our home grown talent a go re: Fifty faster than Holmes and just as much skill.

Is this a joke? Dufty as skilled as Holmes? Lmao. Dufty won't even make first grade. Holmes will play origin and for Australia one day

I wouldn't come to the Dragons if I was Lachlan as very very few players have been brought to the club and improved under the inept coaching structure during the last 5 years. Our coaching has sucked the confidence and football ability out of too many.

Agree. Under Bennett was the only time players improved. Boyd, Soward, Scott, weyman etc..

Clearly shows a coaching problem. Coote will ruin his career coming here and won't make a difference with our structures. I would be looking at the Bulldogs if I was him.

Obviously never watched them against each other in 20 s .Dufty held his own and was easily faster. The only difference is one plays for sharks and one plays for dragons , one gets a chance and one does not . NO JOKE!

Recruitment has been very average for some time, agreed. Dugan would have joined Brisbane if they didn't go cold on him last minute, packer picked up from the door step of long bay, lafai unwanted by the dogs and last man standing post Roberts signing with broncos and hiku Penrith. Benji another picked up after a failed rugby stint.

I understand players do move when unwanted by their current club but it's been like the monty python bring out your dead scene for a long time.

Even if the team manages to put together a few wins and salvage the season, it's short term upside. Longer term things look more half glass empty as it seems the competition is greater for guys playing themselves out of spots

We are finding it hard to attract players and this maybe due to various factors including the coaching staff and perceived lack of experience. Coote was a class above our halves and would be a good purchase if we could land him.I am sorry but Widdop and Marshall offer very little creativity in the current halves and it may be time for a stint with the Cutters.
