I'd say it is more to do with the financial benefits associated with taking the game there. At the end of the day, we need to be making money and chances are that the club has been offered ridiculous amounts by the QLD government/the stadiums owners and/or some other third party to take the game there. I know Parramatta have a similar arrangement with the Northen Territory State Government to play games in Darwin and we get paid a decent amount to take a game to Perth. I don't like it any more than you do but if it means that we can be rich and prosperous that it doesn't both me too much. In any case, it makes for a much better spectacle to have a full house up there in Cairns as opposed to a half-full ANZ Stadium.

I have no problem with the games being played away from Sydney. But surely we have some say over who we play in those games. Why would you choose to play the premiers in their own backyard, where the crowd will be atleast (probably a lot more) 50% Cowboys fans. Why wouldn't you play the Cowboys in Sydney and the Bulldogs or Tigers in Cairns?

But the Cowboys are based in Townsville and we've taken the game to Cairns so it's not like we are playing it on their home ground.

Its a 4 hour bus drive into a place where our opposition will have the majority of supporters. Its certainly a lot closer to a Cowboys home game than a Rabbitohs one.

Any news on reynolds? If Reynolds plays i expect walker to go back to fullback, aj wing, burgess out. I'd prefer Carter at lock, Sam in the front row. Lower minutes better quality out of sam.

I see where you are coming from and sort of agree with you; we could well be sacrificing two competition points for the money. I think that this was done deliberately by South Sydney officials because THEY WANT Cowboys fans to show up. Ultimately, the club probably doesn't care who turns up so long as bums are on seats and the game is a sell out. In saying that, I think the NRL has some say in who we can and can't take there. I remember after last year's game in Perth, the Warriors kicked up a massive stink because of the travel involved and complained to the NRL that we had an unfair advantage. Hence, that is why we played the Titans there this year - because the NRL stepped in and prevented us from taking the Warriors over there.

It is but the name is North Queensland Cowboys and when I was up in Cairns a few years back it did seem to be Cowboys that were the main team.
Kind of like Cowboys taking their home game against us to Belmore. Yes its not our home turf but its pretty bloody close

As a Queenslander who has lived in NQ and have family who are still up there, this is absolute nonsense. Everyone in NQ supports the Cowboys, they travel for hours every week to get to the games. That's why they ask for Saturday night games, it lets their fans travel the hundreds of kms it takes some of them. instead of leaving from home our boys are catching a plane, checking into a hotel like its an away game. Our opposition just have a long bus ride amd they are the bloody premiers.

There's also the monetary value of field (bigger crowd, government incentives). So while the Cowboys may have support, it's not quite the same as playing in townsville as they have the same disrupted game day routine and un-familiar ground. There's also the benifit of a team travelling away and going into camp, if you've ever been a part of a footy team you know these trips away builds team spirit (maybe not going to be an effect in this game, but has long term value)

Gray hasn't been flash since his return, but before hand he was close to our best player. I wouldn't drop him due to 1 game, especially as he's shown us this season what he is capable off.
Mcinnes is the best hooker we've got. Yea he has his problems, but there's not many other options.
Tyrell is lucky to be there. His there purely because we have injuries in the prop position. George and/or Musgrove were fit there's no tyrell.

Carter is coming off a suspension. Unlucky not to be there. Maybe the coach is unhappy with his over the top style and is trying to send a message by not picking him.
Cook is rumoured to be on his way out. The guy has been a Dissapointment so far this season, mcinnes is ahead of him which tells you something. The last thing we need is a hooker being run over repeatedly for 80 minutes.
The coach can only work with the cattle his got unfortunately

These are good points but they would have also applied to any other team as well. Cows are still the worst side to take to Cairns though.

You have the advantagea of an away trip, going into camp, making the money, without the downsides, playing at a teams home were they are comfortable plus they also have a disrupted routine.
