Any coach needs enough good players. The main problem is there are not enough big forwards in the squad, which is what I said at the start of the season. We may need a better dummy half too. Madge's style needs plenty of big forwards in the squad, and a dummy half who can take advantage of the momentum that those forwards create.
Given that we are in a competition with a salary cap and that all the teams are pretty close together in terms of playing talent, it is often the coaches that prove to be the difference between the top teams and the bottom teams. Hence, the argument that Madge needs top quality players to succeed is a moot point because he is never going to have a squad full of star players to choose from; he is in the same position as every other NRL coach! Moreover, the team he inherited was arguably the same group of players that underachieved under John Lang, so if they were so good then why didn't they win the comp under his tutelage?
In saying that, you have hit the nail on the head when you mention the dummy half position. The only thing that I will correct you on is that you have got it the other way around; our big forwards need a hooker who can make metres from dummy half so that they can capitalise on defences that are constantly retreating. A hooker of that style is the key ingredient if you are going to play a power-style game otherwise it is too easy for opposition forwards to move up and close our big forwards down. Isaac Luke was perfect because he was so powerful out of dummy half that not only would he catch markers out but he would also suck in a couple of other defenders in the line. Hence, the likes of Burgess' and Ben Teo had an excellent platform to rumble forward from. That is one of the reason why we have struggled this season - because we don't regularly play a hooker who offers that style of play. In a sense, the work of Luke inflated the abilities of the Burgess' and even Teo. Don't get me wrong those guys were excellent in their own right but it was the work of Isaac Luke that allowed them to play the way they did. I think the whole idea that the Burgess' and Teo were unstoppable and could win games single handedly is a myth.
