They've done studies with sub 9 and it's testing human limits, at some point I think curiosity will get the better of us with doping.

Mostly because Bolt doesn't fit the stereotype size of a sprinter, sort of like if McEvoy were to win the 50m free twice and be competing for a 3rd time.

Jonhson's running gait is weird af.

Thats already been done mate. Alex Popov, who is probably my favourite swimmer of all time and the most technically perfect swimmer of all time, in Barcelona and Atlanta did the 50, 100 double and then won Silver in 100 free in Sydney and was a finalist in 50m. After doing the double in the 2003 worlds he failed to even final in Athens (although he was the oldest male competitor in the pool). He is the only man to have done the double in the 50-100 twice at the Olympics I believe.

I don't think anyone will do that again, ever. It is rare if sprinters even medal in both events anymore. It doesn't make him greater than Phelps though.

McEvoy is out of the 200m free relay.
Good decision imo.
Chalmers qualified with fastest time too.

Criticism in the media appearing now in respect of this decision.

They missed a medal by 0.68 of a second.

McEvoy wanted to swim but "the coaches" overruled him apparently...

Is this a team or not?

Loved Groves swim - hope she medals. These 100m free boys are doing well they could both medal, gold is possible but the American is clear favourite in my opinion. Pure racer.
That 200m womens race was awesome - McKeon is hot and swam great.
Phelps - legend. Real pleasure to have watched his career.
Adrian is favourite imo too.

I can tell you right now these guys are ultra fit. He could swim his 100 free semi, do a short 1k cool down/warm up and be fresh as a daisy for the 4x 200 free. The 4 x 200 was after his 100 free semi. Leaving him out of the 200 relay is borderline tanking/stupidity by the Dolphins head coach.

Cate Campbell gets the olympic record in her heat despite the fact she basically switched off and stopped trying with about 30 to go.

I think Groves will win Silver.

I think she has a big chance to get the gold. She blew the rest away and looked very comfortable and she has gone faster earlier this year. Hoping she was holding a bit back and has more to give.

It's a strange decision to me that has probably cost a silver medal for a number of guys in the team...

It's the last event of the day and he has a lot of recovery time until the 100m final..

Also it's only 200m freestyle FFS!

It's a decision that highlights to me that the management of the team is feeling the pressure big time to cotton wool a strong medal chance but I reckon the morale of the team will take a hit as a result....

If we were a chance for GOLD I'd agree with you but just for a bronze or silver there isn't much point. Rest up he has the 100m to focus on.

Its not a matter of fitness its about putting him in the best position to win a gold and having him well rested is the key.

Nobody will have any issues if he gets gold.

I'm with Frankus on this one.

Phelps swam how many races and won 8 Gold in 2008? Hooszu has swum a shitload for 3 Gold here, too; including racing more than once on the same day.

And yet you're telling me McEvoy can't swim a 200m freestyle and then back up for a 100m 24hrs later? Please.

A Silver or Bronze is nothing to sneeze at. It's not just about Gold. It's about competing as part of a team and giving all you've got in pursuit of any medal. The Aussie coach decided not to do that.

Pretty weak imo.

A couple of other guys in that relay team are not going to get near another medal either...

Puts even more pressure on McEvoy now to win...

Are you f**king serious? How many kms a week do you think these guys do in the pool? 50+ is the answer. Him swimming that 200 would not impact on his 100 performance the next day.

Also he and the rest of that team may never swim at another Olympics. But f**k it - we don't compete for silver or bronze.

I doubt any of Phelps races where likely to come down to split seconds let alone finger tips, whereas history shows that the 100 usually comes down to a finger tip. Additionally I doubt Phelps would have risked the relays if he only had one shot at gold. Its just totally different circumstances.
McEvoy would be looking at a guy like Magnussen and the hang dog expression he gets around with these day and he would be fully aware that he may only get one shot at this - especially with an 18 year old countryman already biting at his heels.

I'd say Magnussen and Sullivan coming fairly close to gold would have played heavily in the decision.
Magnussen was full of himself, so that didn't help, but he didn't relax at all and probably burned a lot of energy getting worked up before the race.

Which is why I'll reserve judgment until after McEvoy's individual performances are over.
