Wendell Sailor ends nine-year association with St George Illawarra
WENDELL Sailor has left St George Illawarra, ending a nine-year association with the club.
Since ending his playing career in 2009 after two seasons with the Dragons, Sailor has been the face of St George Illawarra as their ambassador.
He has fronted the Dragons’ in-house media production, mixed with corporates and mingled with fans.
“I love the club and I am thankful that they gave me a chance,” said Sailor, whose decorated playing career included premierships with Brisbane and a successful rugby stint with the NSW Waratahs and Wallabies.
“But I felt it was time to freshen up the role. I want to do a few other things and I don’t want to have to commit to being at every home game any more. I want to do things which will give me a break. I don’t want to be consistently on the road.”
Sailor’s role with the Dragons was reduced this year. He will now focus on his growing media career plus he will lead a touring group to the US Open golf tournament in 2017.
Sailor will also continue his work with indigenous programs.
“If I do Dragons stuff, sometimes I can’t take time off,” Sailor said. “I’ve got three kids who I need to give a bit more of my time to.”
While Sailor won’t be at the club next year, his son Tristan will remain until at least the end of next year. After being part of the Illawarra Steelers under-18 grand final team, the five-eighth/fullback will step into the under-20s squad next year.
“He is happy at the moment and the club has done a really good job with him,” Sailor said.
Sailor has had discussions with Dragons coach Paul McGregor about staying involved in the club by helping coach the NRL’s outside backs, plus the club’s junior and under-20s teams.
