Wendell Sailor ends nine-year association with St George Illawarra

WENDELL Sailor has left St George Illawarra, ending a nine-year association with the club.

Since ending his playing career in 2009 after two seasons with the Dragons, Sailor has been the face of St George Illawarra as their ambassador.

He has fronted the Dragons’ in-house media production, mixed with corporates and mingled with fans.

“I love the club and I am thankful that they gave me a chance,” said Sailor, whose decorated playing career included premierships with Brisbane and a successful rugby stint with the NSW Waratahs and Wallabies.

“But I felt it was time to freshen up the role. I want to do a few other things and I don’t want to have to commit to being at every home game any more. I want to do things which will give me a break. I don’t want to be consistently on the road.”

Sailor’s role with the Dragons was reduced this year. He will now focus on his growing media career plus he will lead a touring group to the US Open golf tournament in 2017.

Sailor will also continue his work with indigenous programs.

“If I do Dragons stuff, sometimes I can’t take time off,” Sailor said. “I’ve got three kids who I need to give a bit more of my time to.”

While Sailor won’t be at the club next year, his son Tristan will remain until at least the end of next year. After being part of the Illawarra Steelers under-18 grand final team, the five-eighth/fullback will step into the under-20s squad next year.

“He is happy at the moment and the club has done a really good job with him,” Sailor said.

Sailor has had discussions with Dragons coach Paul McGregor about staying involved in the club by helping coach the NRL’s outside backs, plus the club’s junior and under-20s teams.

Exactly what he mentioned to me at the last RedV function. I think it will be the new coach that decides if he is to be involved coaching our outside backs not McGregor.

It would be a good thing if he does.

I like Del when he is being funny, talking about himself and the old days and just telling stories.

But get him to try and do anything serious and he is woeful. For the most part, he's Incapable of completing a thought or a sentence, bringing in completely unrelated stuff. He and Gordon Tallis are two peas in a pod. I honestly can't work out why they are paid to comment. I turn off the radio or the TV if either are involved. I had to sit through Del delivering a speech to the Chairman's Lounge on Anzac Day. At the conclusion, no one on my table could work out what the topic was and what he was endorsing or what his relationship with them was - it was embarrassing.

After 6 lean years in the abyss era of Price and McWreckor, poor Dell has probably had enough. How can you defend the indefensible and still have any credibility. Good luck in your next venture Big Dell.

100% correct assessment of Wendel. Maybe next year...when commenting about the Dragons he may say something closer to the truth..everything he has ever said about the Dragons is sugar coated...it's not funny..

Just like the fans feel at the moment.

I feel they need someone who's a better public speaker and more media savvy for the role... Sailor may be more useful as a backs coach for the juniors rather than the NRL squad.

I'm concerned losing him and Marshall is doing serious damage to the marketability of the Dragons. It's not as if the team is drawing a lot of publicity upon itself.

Losing games and playing with no imagination does serious damage to the clubs marketability.

I am sure if we start scoring points and we ditch the coach, players and supporters will want to be part of it
