I suspect the best solution would be to build the game around the assumption of set defensive lines while still allowing for opportunities for attacking play.

Exactly.

Ball skills and adventurous play should be the determining factor, not how quickly you play the ball. No kid anywhere ever said: "oh wow, look at how fast he played the ball - lets go practice fast play the balls dad". And certainly not who gobbles up free metres the best.

Another reason to go back to 5 metres is there is something inherently wrong with gifting territory in the game and that is what 10 metres does. You are virtually guaranteed at least 7 metres with a well timed hit up (and is there any other sort of hit up now that they don't call forward passes from DH). So, why take any risks passing it around? Take the free metres and apply pressure. ( "wow, lets go practice applying pressure dad!!")

The ten metres produced attractive football throughout the nineties before full time coaches worked out the value of slowing the play the ball down. Or worse the value of getting a fast play the ball by getting to the ground quickly.

5 metres reduces free metres up and down the field and 11 men opens up space laterally so the teams that throw lots of good gutsy passes are going to prevail.

Some good points T-Boon.

Best thread I've read in my time here. Your points are great as well Gutfull.
I've been a fan of Sean Fagan's thoughts on the game for several years now. I would have him on the NRL rules committee. But Greg McCallum and Bernie Gurr as thinkers in the game are new to me.

I can't imagine a 5m rule working unless we have less players on the field...and I can't see that happening ever.

I think teams are too good defensively now to only have 5m between them. They are too fit. Running back 10m tires them out, so would probably have to cut back interchanges as well.

Basically you would have to go back to what the footy was like pre-90's, which would be shit because the fans would find that boring these days.

Reducing the number of players on the field is the right thing to do. With the players spread out across the field (back in the day the forward were all in the middle). There is just not enough space.

Agreed. What do we think the ideal number would be?

I was reading a book about Dr James Naismith (invented basketball from scratch so has some cred). He reckons the right amount of players for a team sport is the least amount of players possible without effecting the core skills you want in the sport.

With 9 and 5 metres the action would be awesome but I think 9 is too few because I don't see how you get 80 minutes out of 9 players. But I also think the least amount we need to get off the field is 2...so either 11 or 10.

Massive advantage of 10 or 11 is you can have more teams with the same amount of players and the stars would have more influence on each game.
