Billy when world cup sides were announced: lack of Penrith representation is a reflection of how devoid of stars we are
Billy when we sign an Australian representative 5/8: ffs he's shit

TheEroticGamer before today: making shit up
TheEroticGamer today: still making shit up.
TheEroticGamer tomorrow: who gives a f**k?

It’s still a 40% difference, not insignificant.

True but Maloney played the full season. Storm, Roosters and a few other teams got to work him over.

Moylan had no such working over though who knows if a pre season would help or not. It is the same as the rest of his game.

You know Maloney misses almost 6 tackles a game over several seasons. He also has more kick metres, more 40/20's and earnt more drop outs.

Nothing to say Moylan will ever hit those levels.

The general fanbase are morons, most thought May was a better option than Matty. Happy we got a mostly soild half to replace him

Frankly your suggestions our general fan base are morons is offensive.

The majority of our fans, club members and season ticket holders are hard working die hard rugby league fans who support our club thru the good times and the not so good.

While we have not won the NRL premiership we have actually qualified for the finals in three or our last four seasons something we have not been renowned for in our history.

The only moron is you mate., someone who contributes nothing positive about anything our club does.

Matt Moylan has moved to the Sharks and perhaps you should too.

The big advantage of Maloney is his kicking game, totally agree. Cleary’s kicking needs improving too.

But then Maloney will never have Moylan’s hands & short passing. There’s pros & cons on both sides.

I see why the sharks wanted the deal too. It may appear a risk for them considering Moylan hasn’t played a lot of 5/8, but their team is aging, so bringing in a 26yo playmaker does make some sense.

Dickheads like Martie Lang want to suck his dick.

f**k the stats. f**k the results. Whatever Gould does was perfect.

I thought we were friends MX? You really know how to break a heart.

Outbursts like this is my favourite thing about re-signing Griffin.

Mostly before my time but its clear Brandy would have been our best by a mile if not for the Death of Ben.
Brandy had it all. I idolised him mate.We know what happened, so there's no need to go over it again. He had injuries too.

Brandy had the best skills I've seen, he is the best, but this is not just about skills. It's about about influence and longevity.

Anything official yet?
Anything other than Josh Massoud saying that it is understood?
It's also believed to have been reported by sources.

Seriously, there's been nothing tangible on this since Gus fronted the media 2 months ago. I'll reserve my judgement, since I have no particular agenda to push.

Panthers to have Matt Moylan, James Maloney swap finalised by Monday

PENRITH CEO Brian Fletcher has confirmed the $6 million player swap between Panthers skipper Matt Moylan and Cronulla star James Maloney will be finalised as early as Monday.

As revealed in the Daily Telegraph, Moylan and Maloney will swap clubs in a move that could spark significant change in the player transfer market.

There are still several salary cap and contract issues, including third party, to be resolved before the deals can be approved and finalised by the NRL.

It’s understood Moylan will link with the Sharks on a four-year $3.6 million deal, while Maloney would make Penrith his sixth club in a three-year $2.5 million move.

Fletcher said both deals should be rubber-stamped by the NRL next week.

We are working towards a deadline of Monday,” Fletcher said.

“It hasn’t been done yet and a couple of things have to be tied u

It is not over the line yet, but it is looking like it will get there.”

Fletcher’s confirmation of Moylan’s departure from Penrith brings an end to his saga at the club dating back to late last season when he was rested for the remainder of the year to deal with personal issues.

The 26-year-old, who is contracted until the end of 2020, has been unhappy at the Panthers for the past six months after struggling to get along with coach Anthony Griffin.

Penrith officials have denied a rift exists between player and coach, but sources close to Moylan insist the pair have a fractured relationship.

It is believed Moylan wants play in the halves next season at Cronulla alongside premiership-winning halfback Chad Townsend.

Penrith were believed to be asking for a transfer fee of around $250,000 for rival clubs to sign Moylan, but they could now waive that given they’ve signed Maloney.

Moylan’s move to Cronulla would end the club’s interest in disgruntled Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce, who is weighing up his future at Bondi following the signing of Melbourne champion Cooper Cronk.

Moylan is an international... Sharks have offloaded Maloney to us to get him.
Well he made the squad but didn't get onto the field. At a reported 3.6m for 4 years the Sharks are taking a big risk. Still this is a very sad day for the Penrith club and this fan at least, for this is a player seen for years as the future of the club. Moylan will need to improve his own attitude quite sharply if he's to make the next step, and I'm not convinced Cronulla under Flanagan is the right place to do that.

Cleary: Made the finals once in 4 attempts, win rate 47%.
Griffin: Made the finals twice in 2 attempts, win rate 58%.

Now I'm the first to agree Griffin has shortcomings, but you've got to be fair.

I was pretty deliberate with my words. I don’t consider that *significant* improvement.

Especially when you consider 2 things.

Cleary’s win percentage is always going to be lower, he took over when we were at our lowest ebb. Had to preside over a total rebuild.

Secondly 2015 was one of the worst injury hit seasons I can ever remember.

I think there’s a strong argument that Cleary would have at least matched the 58% win rate in 2016/17.

He has made the Australian squad twice (2014 and 2016)... and he has played for Australia. How can any Panthers fan not remember that? He was the best player on the field in an Australian match.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...t/news-story/ee474abe04b0aa0536ad77b9bb51b9fb

He had 4 try assists and 2 linebreaks for Australia. Even setting Mansour up for a try. This was at the end of the 2016 season where he was arguably the form player of the competition for Origin 3 onwards. Playing 6 for NSW really gave him more confidence in his playmaking. No wonder people don't care about losing him. They have forgotten how good he was.

But to be fair, nearly every player went backwards for us from 2016 to 2017. There's different excuses for everyone. But when you have that many players going backwards surely the coach has to take some of the blame?

Moylan. Cartwright. Merrin. DWZ. Peachey. Blake. Wallace. Latu. etc. all had worse seasons. Alot of that had to do with the coach not settling on positions aswell. Moylan having to share his role in the team with TMM. Cartwright being a second rower.. than a 6... than a second rower. Peachey and Blake being moved around to accomodate Hiku and Whare. Latu and Merrin really just sucked. Tamou came in and most of our pack turned soft like him. Thankfully we had Yeo and RCG busting their asses each week.

Most players seem to get worse under Hook the longer he coaches them. At Broncos the only player who improved was Ben Hunt. Took him about 3 years to be a first grader though. He couldn't get Ben Barba to perform. He couldnt get it right between Corey Norman and Josh Hoffman. Deadset the same things are happening here. Corey Norman was a joke at the Broncos. Since leaving he has gone from being a solid player in his first season at Eels to an actual quality player.

The only players who truly improved in 2017 were guys who are just naturally developing and maturing. Cleary. RCG. Yeo etc. None of our established players were better IMO. Least of all the guys on big money. Tamou averaged less metres than 7 of his teammates FFS. Merrin was invisible most of the year... well performance wise. His fat ass was easy to spot on field when he offloaded to the opposition.

OK he got a game against Scotland and carved them up. Must have blinked and missed it.

As Susan George said in the original Straw Dogs "But he didn't, did he?"

No injuries the past 2 seasons of course, and the coach took over immediately after the side had played in the 2015 spoonbowl, but whatever.

As I said, I chose my words deliberately.

2015 was the worst injury hit season. Not that 2016/17 didn’t have injuries.

2016, when Griffin took over, was much more a of complete squad than when Cleary took over in 2012.

The two circumstances are vastly different & there’s no way the team can be said to have improved SIGNIFICANTLY since 2014 when we made the preliminary final.

That’s not to say Cleary shouldn’t have been moved on, just that the improvement has been slight at best.

So what are peoples thoughts on what makes a successful season?

For mine anything less than top 4 is a failure. We have spent huge money of Maloney. Merrin and Tamou. At the expemse of some very talented players.

Cleary is no longer a rookie. RCG is now an international prop. 3/4s of our backline are top tier country international players (NZ/AUS). Edwards should be primed for a breakout season.

Our depth is shot to hell. But that's not an excuse when we let our best depth go to be in a better position elsewhere.

Top 4 is a success. Top 8 is acceptable but kind of disappointing to have failed to build om 2016 after 3 years.

Missing the top 8 is unacceptable... and I think we will be a 6th to 10th placed team now. I really think we will struggle to win games the way Maloney is used to.

With Maloney and the roster we have Top 4 next year. Anything worse would be a failure.

Cleary took us to the top 4. We beat the minor premiers to make Week 3 of finals and did so with Cartwright. Peachey. Wallace. Taylor and a couple of other injuries.

Our team had more steal about them under Cleary. He rebuilt our squad for Griffin. He wasnt ever going to win us a premiership. Neither will Griffin. Cleary for mine is a slightly better coach. He just had an inferior roster.

Neither can take us to the next step though. Brennan probably could with a roster who loves him and he helped build also. Or from established coaches guys like Toovey, Maguire or Dessie.

We got smashed by injuries in 2015, and while there is an element of luck to that, part of a coaches role is making sure players are both physically up to the rigors of the NRL and managing their rehab properly. One injury is luck, losing close to an entire first grade team isn't.

I think it's notable that we were both one of the fittest teams in the comp this year as well as having a vastly reduced injury toll. I think we're doing something right there.
