Yep might be worth it....

Luke Page for PNG is the Burleigh Bears captain apparently. He may be worth a look for some more depth......

He goes allright...
I haven't seen him play but I Wiki'd him.
He will be 27 before the season starts.
He's played 1 Nrl game for the Dragons.
He's been in the Dragons, Raiders and Titans systems.
Maybe he's a late bloomer or there's more to his story re injuries etc.
Could be worth perusing as a depth signing based on what you blokes are saying, but in my opinion a similar signing to Nichols , just without the Bellamy polish.

Wade scored a try straight through gus and reyno the night we played them, gus made 12 tackle breaks either running sideways or backwards
Crichton had the second most tackle breaks of any forward in the competition behind Taumalolo.

If you don't see the talent, that's fine. It just hurts your credibility

Michael hancock broke more tackles than nearly anyone in nrl history!does not mean he was going through the line, like taumololo, for the benefit of his team.cut the cred shit,i know the boy has talent,he aint no superstar as yet,and i will be the first to acknowledge him if he plays even close to the standard next year, that wade graham is playing at now.this is the intrinsic problem with nrl fantasy, there are tackle breaks(sideways or backwards),and there are tackle breaks(through the line).the both score the same,i know which one every nrl coach would prefer.

500k out of a 9.6 mil cap..... you're kidding yourself.........

If Napa gets 700 which was strong rumours then Angus is worth that....

Napa is overrated......

And this is exact reason why Souths have trouble with their salary cap. It's people like you that run the salary cap. They see a player have a good season and straight away think "lets throw 700k a year at a second rower...". Then a few years down the track you're on here complaining that Souths have terrible cap management and our recruitment is a joke.

Napa is a prop that has had 1 average season but has proven himself at every level. There was a game last year where Napa single handedly destroyed our whole forward pack. On the flip side Crichton is a young kid who has had 1 breakout season and is suddenly worth 700k. I think I know the one who's kidding themselves...

You're clutching at straws here trying to justify throwing 700k at Crichton so I suggest you just stop. There is no argument that proves he is worth that much. Doesn't matter whether he looks like "Bob McCarthy" because he isn't Bob McCarthy. He is a great young talent, but there are a lot of great young talents in the NRL.

The debate on the worth of young talent will go on forever but the reality is that they are worth what someone is willing to pay. At the end of the day Souths have to build a team around what they can afford, I would like Crichton to stay but I would prefer that he also demonstrates a desire to play for Souths.

Building a team takes more than one player and Souths have to get the balance right. Are we there? I am not convinced but there is potential and the big question is whether the players out of form find form and the developing players quickly develop. It is what it is and it does not look like we will have any other great recruitment happening for next year.

We definitely won't have space for recruitment if we throw 800k at Angus.

Do you have any evidence to suggest Crichton's tackle breaks aren't through the line, or would that just not fit your narrative?

You just seem to be desperately clinging to any excuse to downplay his form last season.

My narrative is that a great percentage of his tackle bust are lateral.there is no desperation here, and i dont need to downplay his efforts this year anymore than several posters on here inflate his actual deeds.i will not post anything more on this subject until mid next year, when we can then see who has a narrative, and who is talking objectively.or do just have to say"i disagree",and all will heed my wisdom?

Well said. This argument won't be settled until next year. Whilst Crichton was a star this year it's all about whether he can back it up. Ryan James was one of the best props in 2016 imo but failed to make as much of an impact this year. It's not easy maintaining dominance like Crichton did year in, year out. I'll be happy if Crichton can just show consistency.

Offering Angus anything over 500k shows signs of desperation which the managers feed off. If Boyd is on 750k at the Roosters as club captain, origin captain, future Aussie capt, premiership winner, 80 minute player with 150 games and still young, then Angus is worth half of that. He is keen to go to a club with a premiership on the cards Roosters are chance and so is Cronulla. Roosters are offering $450 a year so it's not the money, plus he hates the coach and his best mate got stitched up. There is more to these things than just cash, his family has plenty anyway.
You need to buy a half, hooker and a long term ball playing full back to be any chance to be competitive not spend all your money on forwards. They don't help your attack and your attack was hopeless last year.
He had a super year last year considering the right side attack doesn't exist because both hookers can't pass effectively from left to right or off the ground. If he backs it up and plays origin this year he will get 500k next year otherwise you would've spent your cash on potential instead of results.

Agree with this--Crichton has huge potential but he still has a long way to go!
By the middle of 2018 his suitors might not be willing to offer what he may get right now if his form drops off.
He's probably prepared to back himself to produce bigtime;to become a rep player so as to attract the bigger bucks.
Things can go radically wrong to spoil that plan; like injury for example!!

I think a lot of you guys aren't factoring in the increase in the salary cap going forward.

A couple of years ago, 500k was a benchmark, now you'll find that 750k will probably be the new normal. Consider that Kalyn Ponga is on 800k a year at Newcastle and he hasn't even made a ripple in first grade yet.

That 750 - 800k mark will be good player money in a year or two and great players will be looking at around 1.2 - 1.3mill

I cannot believe some of the things I am reading on here. Who would have thought there’d be so many Souths supporters willing to let go the best young forward we’ve had in 6 or 7 years. As a couple have said, he is worth whatever someone is willing to pay him, and to us he is worth more. He makes his tackle breaks running sideways? What bullshit! He should be on half of Cordner? f**king nonsense. Pay peanuts and get monkeys. Angus will be worth every cent he gets paid, I just hope the cheque has SSFC at the top.
