Some hope for us when we try to re-sign him. At least he doesn't hate the coach.

Maybe he does like the coach. Moylan obviously didn't but that doesn't mean they all do.

But what kind of player comes out and publicly shames their coach? Doesn't happen very often. Came across as a run of the mill statement from Cleary IMO

No player will leave while they are happy and settled. We will move who we have to keep him
We are going to have to pay ridiculous money to keep him.

We should be looking at bumping his existing contract up if he'll re-sign now.

An extra $200k for the next 2 years is $400k, and maybe the following 2 years we get him for $200k less.

Only works if we have cap space to do it... which might not be the case when Maloney, Merrin and Tamou are $700k+ players. Moylan was on less than that. So we didnt gain space losing him and signing Maloney.

Just a wild thought.
What if the whole remarks by Ivan 'that one day he would like to coach his son' are a little bit of bait for Penrith. Lets put aside the genuine Father and Son bond that they have for a moment.
Think about
Reports have been in the past that Cleary jnr is a little reluctant to play under his old man. Ivan had said on record he would not have handed his son his FG debut so soon.
What if Ivan's comments are taken another way. looking out for his Son.
He has dealt with Gould and knows he drives a hard bargain. Gould apparently low balled Nathan earlier this year. Why would he come out now and made those thoughts public? Nathan has 2 years left on his deal and would be in no rush to decide his future post 2019.
I'm am sure Gould is having another go right now trying to extend Nathan during the pre season.
I wonder if Ivan's comments are used to drive up a bit of demand for his Son? Push Gould into a bit of panic?

This is where Gus has failed. How we are right on the cap given our roster is a joke. We will have to move some guys around to do it. He is worth losing who we need to just crazy we have no room to move over contracts around

Would be a shame but we can afford to lose May

Edwards is a must keep though

I was thinking more a few props/Backrowers can go.

a team of rookies with the odd old head shouldn't be right on the cap. I would love to know a breakdown of where the money went cap wise. We have only the starting backs and Peachey. Have no backup half, Ageing hooker. Shouldn't be right on the cap

Tamou was just a f**king ridiculous signing. $700k+ for an average front rower. He's nowhere near the games best.

Shed him. Replace him in top squad with a minimum wage player. Gives an extra $600k to spread between Edwards and Cleary.

8. Mez
9. Katoa
10. Latu
11. Yeo
12. Kikau
13. Cartwright

14. RCG
15. JFH
16. CHN
17. Peachey

May
Leota
Mckendry
Browne
Clark
Jed
Ellis

Depth might be getting a little thin experience wise. But I think the money Tamou is on split between Cleary and Edwards (potentially a minor upgrase to others also) would be a much better spend. Im sure we can find the 110m gained elsewhere.

Although if we offloaded him we would likely be covering atleast some of his contract. No club would ta ke him for what we paid.

You can always get props or backs for minimum wage to fill out the squad.

Going into last year

We had TMM/Cleary halves. Both in their 1st full season of FG
Yet had to release Hiku so we could afford to re-sign CHN?

Aside from DWZ none of the kids have played reps to demand a huge payrise. So we have to be paying overs for Bryce and co

Moylan can want out. But Gus had all the power and it was up to him to negotiate his release.

Gus knew all along how that situation would play our. Our CEO said it was 50/50 long before Gus denied it.

Moylan never said anything in the media. Not one way or the other. So atleast unlike Gus, he never lied to us.

You have a funny definition of local. These players may have made their debut for us. But coming from Perth(Blake), NZ (CHN and JFH) is not local.

I would consider us to be a huge part of their development. But not local juniors.

We arent building a team around anyone.

We had 2 quality 5/8ths. Lost both withing 6 months
We had 2 quality hookers. Lost both within a year of each other.

All our big money has been thrown at imports. Cartwright is now the highest paid local boy and his career has been f**ked around. Cleary is the logical player to build around and he has one eye on the door already... Gus sacked his father. His father wants to coach him.. i think his dad has the advantage there.

If you want to believe Gus is perfect at his job no argument will convince you otherwise. Likewise no amount of his lies will convince me that he's making all the right decisions now.

He should have left before sacking Cleary. Its been more bad than good decisions since IMO.

Is Segyaroo and Korisau that much quality? Decent players but hardly elite.
The side should be built around -
RGC - YEO - CLEARY - with the possibilities of Cartwright - Edwards - Mansour - Blake -JFH

Tamou - Merrin can add leadership.

It is a nice solid squad put together. Aslong a the spine gels it could be a very good team. The forward pack is looking very good. Big powerfull and mobile.

Tamou and Merrin had ok seasons. But I expect them both to be a lot better in 2018.
JFH never got going nor did Cartwright. Kikau may be ready too unleash while Latu and McKendry still have something to offer.

Dropping Tamou is not going to happen, nor should it. He had a quiet season last year but I can see no reason why that shouldn’t change.

RCG also gives a lot of the credit for his improvement to Tamou. He brings a lot to the team off the field and would be a loss if we dropped him.

I do concede that we appear to have paid too much for him, if the figure your throwing around is correct.

Do any of you 'experts' really know what anybody's contracts are worth, or whether we are actually on the cap limit?
You whinge when we lose juniors, but don't want to pay what other clubs will.
You want a no dickhead policy but don't want to get rid of home grown ones.
If the world were perfect there would be no salary cap needed, every Penrith junior would stay, and every superstar would be signed. We would have the strongest NRL and ISP sides ever.

Wake up people! Never going to happen! We have good salary cap managers who are doing what they can with the resources they have and the limited TPA's available to the club. They would know a lot more about what is required than anybody here. You don't have to agree with everything the club or Phil Gould does (neither do I), but please stop whining about everything you don't like! It is getting boring!

So we're paying a forward a large part of the cap to be a good influence off the field? He should join the coaching staff and let someone good have a go.

If he returns to his best, he’ll be our best forward. Stupid to leave him out of the squad and risk that.

He has gotten worse the past 3 seasons.

2015 - averaged 141.1m
2016 - averaged 131.4m
2017 - averaged 109.7m

RCG had a terrific season. But he was really only continuing on from where he finished 2015 off. Whatever effect Tamou has off the field, he's not having any on the field. Petero would make 20 hitups per game. Tamou averages less than 10.

Even if Tamou returns to his best. He's not in the top 10 props in the NRL.if he werent supposed to be a forward leader you could say he was ok. But ok doesn't cut it for your highest paid forward. Or any of your top players.

He’s top 5 according to Fox sports. So some people still rate him fairly highly.

I won’t be surprised if he returns to 140+ metres a game, I know he was very disappointed with last year and is gearing up for 2018.

He said at the fan day that he wasn’t hood enough this year and we can expect at big improvement next season.

If he lives up to it that's great. As they say "the proof of the pudding is in the eating"
