Raiders fined 150k

I think the Raiders pay the price for there being too many NRL games in Sydney. It means Sydney NRL fans don't bother travelling at all, let alone 90 minutes to Canberra.
If we had conferences and got Canberra into a conference with the Wollongong Dragons and Campbelltown Tigers they could start to drag some fans down and accross.

Here is a good conference:

Canberra Raiders
ACT Bears
Wollongong Dragons
Campbelltown Tigers
Sharks

The ACT Gov did the right thing not only by themselves but by the taxpayers as well.

The Raiders signed a contract they should keep to it or suffer the consequences, you may say that the contract is shit (and I'd agree that in hindsight after all the benefits that GWS have been given, that by comparison it is a raw deal) but that is beside the point..

100% agree
The ACT GOV can and should enforce their contract
And the raiders can and should do what makes sense for their business

Everyone is doing what they should do here. I don’t think it’s a big deal

I 100% agree, really I do.

I'm just not sure that it makes sense for their business to take NSW money to help fund a centre of excellence in the middle of the city when the land would have been much better used for other things (a f**king car park would have had a better return on investment in that spot), and as part of that agreement agreeing to take games to the bush because they are frustrated with the their stadium deal and the ACT govs constant delaying of the new stadium.

Frankly except for in rare cases I don't think that any government should be spending any taxpayer money on infrastructure for private businesses, especially when the business in question could afford to fund it themselves if they really wanted to, and that goes not only for the COE but for the stadium as well (though that situation is a little more complex I admit), however instead of backing themselves the Raiders (as with most pro sports clubs in the county) feel entitled to get taxpayers money and support from the government. What would be best for their business would be to create a situation for themselves where they bypass the need for support from the government as much as possible, that way they don't need to worry about getting f**ked by Barr (or whoever else), instead what they are doing is diving headfirst into the political arena and that'll will only end in tears for them IMO cause they don't have the leverage to actually get the results that they want.

I also worry that their current situation is being used by some at the club to justify slowly distancing themselves from Canberra as much as possible which would be disastrous for the club. As I'm sure that you and I both know there are quite a few people at the club who in an ideal world would much prefer the club to be the Queanbeyan-Southern NSW Raiders instead of the Canberra Raiders, and almost certainly there are those at the club dumb enough to think that they can be both at the same time.

The point is that I totally understand where the Raiders are coming from, but I'm not sure that they are going the right way about it to actually rectify their issue, and IMO are probably only going to compound their problems by taking the actions that they are.

All very fair and I’m totally with you about sports teams feeling entitled to taxpayer money

So Canberra fans think taking games to the area close should be punished...........

Shark Park > Renters.

The NRL should cover the fine, write it off under the heading, promoting the game in the bush.

It appears as if the raiders and Wagga council factored the fine into their deal, so the 150k is really a non factor.

The issue here is really the renegotiation of the lease agreement for CS.

Article title should be Raiders fined a small amount for moving match to Wagga.

We're not talking about the Sharks or Titans here, this is chump change.

As I said the NRL should pay. As in all clubs subsidise.

I am think it is poor form that a club takes a game elsewhere and gets punished.

I think the NRL should cover any cost, clubs like yours have to sign bullshyte agreements just to play somewhere.

They probably pay the VFL to play there.

Anyhow the way that the Raiders have been going about things has been stupid anyway, hopefully this will be the wake up call that they need to make them realise that acting like spoilt children with delusions of grandeur isn't the way to get what they want...

If they are going to do this, and I understand why they would, they needed a serious PA campaign beforehand and in response to the fine. Get the people onside, get them questioning the Govt's actions and put the pressure on the elected members. As it is they have ended up looking like chumps who break contracts that makes everyone in Canberra worse off.

I was surprised to read in that article that the Raiders get $2mil a year from the tax payers to play in Canberra, That's a sweet deal! I doubt there are many clubs getting paid to exist by their Govt's are there?
