Johnson got released by NZ this morning. Wouldn't mind him but concerned he's a bit injury prone.

Neither is better than Widdop all up imo but I know in the past, as a fan, I tend to be more wary of Norman than Johnson. Johnson might need a fresh start to reinvigorate his career, but like Widdop, the injuries are a concern. I'm team Norman if it's still a possibility. And Mann until then.

In all these discussions I like how some players we have are written off as not being able to get us to a GF let alone win one, yet we are prepared to talk glowingly about the same Norman who has led Parramatta to so much success, over the last few years, Johnson that well known Warriors' GF hero or for Moses that consistent Parra star. Spare me.

I love our club's front foot policy to allow all and sundry to announce to the public what is going on at St George Illawarra before notifying members. The club's media policy of silence and reactive written press statements are a disgrace.

Imagine if Widdop goes in 2019. We will have 4 spots to fill in our roster. LOL. Another Possm Millward Mess. I need to ask the "Calm One". When is someone coming here?

It is frustrating I agree. The problem is not the players fault, the fault is with SGI Club officials who are more interested in their own ambitious aims than the best interests of the Club.

Half of the SGI Board have been replaced however, the other half consists of the same old guard that have led the Club into decline over the past 30 odd years.

There is no doubt that our coach is not up to the job but this is tolerated because of backroom deals done for the likes of Ian Millward to hold down his own little empire of pathways and recruitment.

Mann is a very valuable player who has come at a Bargen price. Brownie knows his stuff and can not only coach at NRL level, he can identify and provide a pathway for juniors while at the same time recruit players and deal with player managers.

If we could attract an experienced top line coach who was given the responsibility of overseeing pathways, recruitment and at the same time the authority to choose his own coaching staff, we will be on our way to greatness again.

Agree pos. I'd have Brownie back tomorrow, JD as well.

Can't agree about Millward, he doing a great job in system the club wants to promote.

Sad to see Kurt gone however, the position of utility may have gone as he's been picked up as a hooker.

We'd have to agree to disagree about Millward. I've been around the block many times now, so I've come to understand that going into season with 4 spots in our 30 still unfilled. We still need at least one experienced first grade right winger who can backup as fullback or right centre if required.

With Norman now sighed, I like to see R Jennings and A Johnston from Souths singed and SGI re-sign Herbert to leave one spot open for any bargains that may come up prior to June 30 next year.

NRL | Knights snare their Mann as St George Illawarra utility star links with the club for the next three seasons
  • Newcastle Knights have snared St George Illawarra’s Kurt Mann for the next three seasons after the utility star was granted a release from his contract at the Dragons.

The 25-year-old, who has played 90 NRL games with Melbourne Storm and St George Illawarra, will formally sign a deal with the Knights today and could be at training as early as Tuesday.

He still had a season to run on his Dragons deal with an option for another year but the opportunity to shed the utility tag and turn himself into a fulltime hooker is understood to have swayed his decision to seek to leave.

He has played in a variety of backline positions in the NRL since making his debut for the Storm back in 2014 but Knights coach Nathan Brown is looking to turn him into a hooking option at the club following the long-term injury to Kiwi international Slade Griffin.

    Kurt Mann

Born in Winton in Queensland, Mann got his start in Newcastle with the Knights back in 2011 when he played for the club’s NYC Under 20’s team.

He represented Queensland Under 20’s against NSW in April, 2012 while at the Knights but signed a three year deal with the Storm two months later.

He played 28 NRL games with Melbourne in 2014-15 before playing a further 62 games with the Dragons over the past three seasons.

Mann’s signing leaves just one spot open on Newcastle’s 30-man playing roster for 2019 but the final position does not have to be filled until June 30 next year.

Brown intends to keep his options open on who that might be.

Kurt Mann granted release to sign with Newcastle Knights
That is now nine new recruits for the Knights.

Written By Sporting News @nospam47au
Newcastle's off-season signing spree has continued with Dragons utility Kurt Mann the latest addition to join Nathan Brown's group of nine recruits.

Mann was released from the final year of his St George Illawarra deal and could join Newcastle's pre-season training as early as Tuesday, reports the Newcastle Herald .

Brown plans to turn the 25-year-old into a full-time hooker - a proposition believed to be behind Mann's eagerness to leave the Dragons.

The former Storm speedster spent some in the hooker role last season behind Cameron McInnes, also shuffling between five-eighth, centre and wing.

Newcastle have endured a luckless run in the No.9 jumper, medically retiring Rory Kostjasyn (throat) in 2017 before he could even put on a jumper, before Slade Griffin suffered his fourth ACL injury last season.

An optimistic Griffin is hopeful of returning in the back half of the season, but it would take a remarkable recovery if he were to play in 2018.

They were reportedly in the market for off-contract ex-Shark James Segeyaro, however that move would only go forward if Danny Levi wasn't on their books.

Levi was in talks with Parramatta and a number of other rivals, but he is set to stay put on the Hunter for now.

The club also added Bulldogs youngster Zac Woolford to their ranks, with the 22-year-old yet to make his NRL debut despite starring in the NSW Cup last season.

Woolford and Mann are part of a formidable recruitment package including Bulldogs enforcer David Klemmer, Warriors duo James Gavet and Mason Lino, Sharks pair Jesse Ramien and Edrick Lee, Melbourne prop Tim Glasby and Souths utility Hymel Hunt.

Mann has made 90 NRL appearances, spending the most part of the 2018 season off the bench as a utility.

Disappointing to lose Mann on a couple of fronts - depth, utility value, ticker but I'm happy for him to go somewhere that he'll get a more of a go whatever that position is.

We are surely a little skinny in the depth department when it comes to ready to go replacements. I'm not panicking as I expect more player movements before Rd1.

The Knights have sort of officially announced it, although in their own special way (word search).

Meanwhile at the Dragons........zzzzz

Did you expect Norman to have signed officially, announcement and all, within the 40 odd minutes since reports of Mann's release surfaced?

Possm mate
Where do you get 4 spots from?

If we include Norman (unconfirmed at this stage) we have 13 backs and 15 forwards thats 28. We also have 5/6 in the DS. So only 2 spots remaining.

I agree that RJ would be a good pick-up and slot in nicely at wing (#29 signing). We could then look to June 30 to complete the top 30.

I expect that Norman's recruitment to SGI was dependant on Mann's official release. So maybe today an announcement on Mann and tomorrow an announcement on Norman.
