Oh there's a huge amount of merit in the idea, hypothetically.

Warnie has lost his mind because there's absolutely no way these bats get us in a position to declare...

Yeah it's a little different when you're chasing 500 and have Hayden, Langer, Punter, Martyn, Tugger, Kato and Gilly at your disposal. In fact Katich is the weakest of that lot and he shits all over this batting lineup.

that has some merit, maybe if we able to get 500+?

time is our enemy to get this win, especially trying to bowl india out, so we need to score quicker and declare earlier than what wed like
Except.... This isn't the Sheffield Shield and you get points for good run rates and outright wins etc.... We are Zero chance of winning this test no matter which way you (not you specifically TPB) slice and dice it and dream up a way of winning it.... If we declared, assuming we would ever bat long enough to have that luxury, I think the Indians would be laughing out loud more than we all Lol@Souffs ....

that's all true

could also be a false dawn if we did manage to score over 500

Not necessarily.

If by some miracle Australia get in a position of declaring, India have shown already that they can lose wickets fast when Cummins had his field day.

Granted it would be one of the great escapes of all time.

Bumrah in the danger zone.

Definitely have to make an example of him, umpires. Hook him!

Not that it matters, but India's declaration came much too late. I really hope Australia don't lose a wicket before stumps.

It also puts the match back on India. What do they want to do? Are they happy to draw? In which case it doesn't change the result anyway, more than likely.

Or do they want to win? Are they willing to go out for a session or two and try and get a 300 run lead? That then opens the door a little, because they need to take risks to do that on a late match wicket.

Ultimately we won't get to that position anyway, obviously. But it's a fun pub table discussion
