I doubt you could keep a lid on having 1.3-1.6 million free in the cap. We’d be linked to everyone if that was the case.

There’s definitely some guesswork, but I think you can make a ballpark call with all the info.

If we move on Whare, though, we’d have close to $1 million. That’s enough where you can make a big play.

There’s some really good players off contract at the end of 2020.

When I was told about the list of players. It was by a Flegg player who heard from his manager that $1m was the figure. Maybe that included Whare but that figure is better can really get 3-4 solid players and a couple of rookies

The rest of the players surely free up a hell of alot more than $600k or else how could we expect to sign players like JWH, Walker, Glenn etc?maybeit was supposed to be $1.6m or something... because $600k is not a warchest. Its half a star players contract.

If we were 'only' $1m over and shed this many players to be only $600k under the real screw up is in managing the releases. We would have to be copping the bulk of contracts if we werent freeing up space.

Although I am confident we did free up more than $600k. Based purely on our targets we have to have more than that.

$600k isn't enough to fix a squad. Its one slightly above average players wage these days... and we have 5 spots to fill. $600k only gets you reserve graders if its split between 5 players. Walkers, JWH etc. wouldnt even be worth talking to. So the figure cant be close to accurate.

If we only have $600k and thats more than any other Sydney club....how do the figures media have put on Fifita, Mitchell, Turbo, Jurbo etc.work?

As for Gus... he always planned for Maloney to be gone after the second year. So if the $1m figure is true (seems likely) obviously in his planning he only has to save ~$150k or so elsewhere and the roster is back under the cap. Whuch is why I believe we were over. Gus spending Jimmys would seem likely.

You make some very good points, thinking about it more rationally its probably far more likely that the DT is just making it up as they go along.

Don’t forget we’ve already spent around 500k on Apisai

DWZ was off contract at the end of next year. But I’ve heard we hardly had to pay any of his contract for next year, it was mostly this year we covered.

It’s 3 things I think.

We’re paying some of RCG & Blake’s contract

and we were over the cap for next year

1 million over the cap is a bigger screw up than paying 25% of RCG’s deal & something of Blake’s

That’s a huge amount to be over.



Fifita, Turbos, Mitchell etc aren’t off contract until the end of next year, as long as the clubs can fit them in for the 2021 season they’re fine.

Yeah I think your $500k estimation was correct on Blake and RCG. The benefit is not having them locked in so long and not being over the cap
