I guess your right you could read that both ways.

I read it initially as him signing for $350 but maybe not.

Either way would the NRL accept a contract for Bryce at $150K given his earnings previously?
Given his form & other issues anything above minimum is a risk. It's not like there was much of a lineup of clubs chasing him. I can't see how anyone could see it as a dodgy deal.

I’m not saying it is dodgy, In fact i acknowledge I may have misinterpreted the dollars involved.

I will say though is the salary cap auditors have to job to only register contracts at market value so whether some one like Bryce who was previously earning say $500 can all of a sudden be only valued at $150K is worthy of further evaluation. Not saying the Eels are rorting, they are not rather whether Bryce should be considered at say $300K or more under the cap.

the fact no one wanted him would've tanked his price

The concerns I have with James Roberts as follows.
He obviously has off field problems. Including mental health battles. Wayne Bennett is like a Father figure to him. Souths have good well respected indigenous mentors around the club.
If they and Bennett can't keep him on the right track. How could any other club?

Very valid points.

I’m not sure that is entirely accurate.

Coaches have a huge say in recruitment and while deals may be signed off by the a board the coaches have huge input.

I don't doubt players are approved by the coach. Coaches shouldn't have a say in how much x player gets

He accepted a paycut ....that's clearly saying how much he is losing.not earning.

Signing a $130k deal makes it a $370k paycut if he was on $500k.

No team would pay him triple minimum wage. Not unless he bounces back on this one year deal. Which is a big reason players do it. Only way he can get big money or have any career at all.

we'll be fine - just let these things play out

Im very confident Critta & Leniu re-sign with us - Burton is the question mark.

unpopular opinion but id marginally increase our current offers to Critta & Leniu to sign and if that means Burton is out... so be it.....

As much as we love burton - we have halves who made a GF together and Burton couldn't crack this team. We are in a prem window now and we need players in key positions we need right now - Centre's & forwards (considering the forwards we have moved on).

Burton can attempt to play centre but its unknown - we know what we are getting with Critta & Leniu = there wont be anything better on the market available for the prices we want to give them, so marginally increase our offer - wrap them up & move on.

re the Laurie potential to WT = do we take that as Staines is ahead of Laurie in our FB options (to succeed Edwards)?

the concern we will have in 2021 is we will encounter some injuries for sure and expectedly in position we didnt cop in 2020 (halves especially) - the good thing for Luai was that Burton was right on his heels to replace him should his form dropped - the squad got the benefit of this as Luai played out of his skin especially the latter half of the season

with Burton potentially going - its going to be concerning that we dont have pressure on the best 17 moving forward

I meant that with his GC stint as a benchmark that his market value would be low. He is like a 10 year old Mercedes, worth big bucks some time ago, but hard to give away right now.

On that note, who else do we have coming through the ranks in the halves that could take Burton’s place should the unthinkable happen and he signs with the Bulldogs?

Even disregarding Burton, we need to be careful about overpaying anyone. We’ve already got 500k+ tied up playing elsewhere, too much money in only a handful of players could create a badly balanced squad.

agreed 100%, but we would be putting money into positions that we need covered, if we lose Critta, we are back to the start of the year, who are our centres etc.

i Think they are both worth the punt increasing offers (within reason of course) - both are young, still filling out and had fantastic first seasons in the NRL, If they perform to the levels they have this year consistently, it’s worth every cent

critta could be something very special personally speaking
