we used to have Saturday night & Sunday arvo, then they moved to twilight GF (which was great) so the games moved to Friday/Saturday night and stayed there when they moved the GF to Sunday night.

better spectacle if it’s arvo games.

I hope the new TV deal has Sunday arvo finals, but we all know it won’t.

It is understood the Nine Network also enjoyed bumper ratings. The news is a huge boost to the NRL as they continue talks with commercial broadcasters over their deal for 2023 and beyond.
The NRL’s agreement with the Nine Network has just over one year to run and while their has been interest from rival networks, Nine’s determination to retain the rights would no doubt be strengthened given they also enjoyed strong ratings to open the finals.
Remarkably, the game between Souths and Penrith was among the top 10 shows in subscription television history, a sign that the code has put its troubles behind it in the run-in to the grand final.
“To have all four finals the most watched matches of all-time is extraordinary,” Fox Sports executive director Steve Crawley said.

The strong ratings come as the game prepares to make a call on expansion.
“Our team of hosts, callers and experts love broadcasting the biggest games of the year. The live drama of Ivan Cleary and Wayne Bennett post-match Saturday night was unmissable television and fresh insight from Luke Keary was terrific.”
The strong ratings come as the game prepares to make a call on expansion. ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys is expected to speak to club bosses in coming weeks about the prospect of adding a 17th team before a final call is made, potentially before the grand final.

The cheaper KAYO option is certainly getting fans to switch over from FTA, especially with the $15month Telstra offer. I'm finding it better than Foxsports at a fraction of the price.

This is generally true in Australia but I still think sports have made it worse on themselves. I think there is the potential for Sunday games to rate better (like what we see in the NFL) but the sports themselves need to make a push for that market. Finals in particular could be played on a Sunday and not lose out on much in terms

Yeah as above this is why looking purely at FTA is almost useless these days. Streaming/subscription viewing is growing rapidly for the NRL whilst FTA is sliding backwards.

the AFL got 735K streaming viewers for their week one finals , up almost 100% on 2020
I suspect the NRL will get a similar increase & crack a million

Total TV ratings Saturday September 11​

The biggest movers in the Total TV ratings for Saturday a week ago were The Durrells (+9% to 513,000), and The Trial of Christine Keeler (+18% to 302,00) on ABC. The biggest commercial channel mover was the Nine doco 9/11: Minute by Minute which lifted 10% to 311,000.
The biggest BVOD audience on Saturday a week ago was for the NRL Qualifying Final with 64,000.

Overnight TV ratings Metro Saturday September 18​

Nine kicked winning Saturday goals in two codes last night with a big Saturday victory which was enough to push Nine’s network share ahead of Seven to win the week. (See separate feature about Week 38 TV ratings.)

Nine was a clear winner with the #1 ranked primary share, multichannel share and network share.
Nine’s embarrassment of football riches saw live matches on Nine and Gem.
The biggest audience was 690,000 watching Penrith Panthers set-up a Preliminary Final clash with Melbourne Storm. At the same time Panthers ended the season for Paramatta Eels. The audience in Sydney was 384,000 and in Brisbane 177,000. With no AFL in Melbourne the NRL audience in that market was 97,000.
Earlier in the day the Wallabies continued their winning form with a victory over South Africa with 336,000 watching. The audience splits were Sydney 148,000, Brisbane 89,000 and Melbourne 51,000.

The primary, multichannel and network shares all tumbled week-on-week with no AFL this weekend ahead of the Grand Final next Saturday night. The shares this time next week should make very different reading.
Seven News was the primary channel’s only primetime timeslot winner with 924,000.
Seven’s Saturday movie Ant-Man was on 280,000, screening in four markets.

Two shows managed to creep into the top 10 – 10 News First with 311,000 and then a repeat episode of The Dog House on 294,000.
ABC
Share jumped week-on-week with less live sport to compete with the English dramas. The Durrells was on 329,000.
The next best was a repeat episode of The Repair Shop just after 6pm with 250,000.
SBS
Castles: Secrets, Mysteries and Legends was the best performing for the channel with 181,000. Next best was SBS World News with 178,000/165,000 across the hour.

instead of getting 150K in Melb with clean air , they'd of got 50K up against the AFL GF
the NRL would still have taken veiwers in NSW & QLD away from their decider & probably a lot more then 100K too

I don't know why the NRL didn't play the storm prelim on the friday night ( nothing on down there ) & play the all sydney prelim on the saturday at the scheduled time of 7.50

The NRL Semi Finals rated a total of 2.81m over the weekend (with streaming & NZ to come). This figure is up 25% on the 2020 Finals series. Streaming is predicted to add about half a million or so to the total, with an expected lift of about 110% on last years figures.

Melb NRL ratings were up 198% on last years semis with no AFL on. The "non heartland" cities up 133% overall (Per +66%, Adl +33%). In the "heartland", Syd ratings were up 22%, while Bris was up 10%. Metro +29%, Reg +16%. FTA +25%. Fox STB +26%

The 2021 NRL Final series to date is rating up 24% on 2020 (+16% on 2019) on FTA/FoxSTB and 33% better than the 2020 series with streaming estimates included.

Without streaming, the 2021 NRL series is the best rating since 2014 hit 8.309m for week 1/2. 2021 should well and truly beat that when streaming is included.

With all things factored in we predict that the NRL leads the finals ratings race at the end of week 2 by just 0.42%, about 38,000. (9.17m to 9.14m) This estimate includes Nine/9NOW, Fox/Kayo/Go/Now.
