And he was playing origin at the time he was called Robson 2. A ridiculous comment.
Cleary hardly deserved to be playing Origin at the time. It was a case of identifying his potential and bringing him into the team to benefit from the experience. A bizarre way to use limited Origin jerseys (only 51 in a year), especially when the sole intent is to win games right now, not build for the future. Player development is to occur in clubland, not Origin.

you earn your place by being the best option in the position for either NSW or Qld .... who was better?

Keary, Walker, Reynolds? It also took cleary his 7th game before he truly made an impact and that was in game 2 2020 when Munster went off injured early, when Munster was playing cleary was near non-existent on the field.

Good on the NSW selectors sticking by a half that wasn't an instant impact on the game, but who's to say another young half if given the opportunity and time to develop into being more comfortable in that atmosphere wouldn't have had a similar path?

Well it's impossible to directly compare players, since they are getting different opportunities to succeed or fail at club level, especially playmakers. Sometimes they need to be thrown into Origin to see how they go. But at the bottom end of Origin players there would be a dozen or more who would do the same job. Only one will get picked, so why not go with the one most likely to keep improving (i.e. the youngest one).

But if they were given 6 games to get it together like cleary was given they also would have likely improved. Keary played 2 more games in the 2 years leading up to cleary's SOO debut and also after missing the opening round Keary played all but 1 game of the 2018 season, cleary missed rounds 4-10 in 2018.

EDIT *Keary also missed rounds 21-23*

Cleary’s defence and kicking game got him the gig, and it was good enough. He never over played his hand unlike Myth Piss who did it constantly over 20 Games. Now he’s the best 7 in the game so it was definitely the right move.

Cleary only just turned 24.
By age 23 he had a premiership a grand final loss and won multiple origin series. Amazing player.

Moses I think has a more exciting game and if both played at their best I might even say Moses is better. But the issue is consistency. Moses will do 3 or 4 good things then something silly and can lose composure. I think it 2021 he was far more composed and if he can stay consistent he can be the best half in the game. His running game is superior to Clearys and so is his passing. Just game management and kicking id give nod to Nathan. He steers the team around better.

Something that is especially important in Origin is one on one defence, which Cleary had already proven at club level. After that halves just need to provide a kicking option. Origin game plans are much simpler than those at club level. It's all about execution.

hindy111's footy knowledge gets overlooked on here cos he also enjoys a good joke and a laugh, but he is easily one of the most broadly knowledgable on here and far less one eyed than most

Yep. Calls it as he sees it, isn’t biased and doesn’t see things thru blue and gold glasses. Gets called out for poor grammar by some, but I have no idea what that has to do with footy or a footy forum. Especially when some of the middle aged clowns continually calling him out, are obsessed with footy players that’ll actually have poorer grammar than 111.
