Problem is current comps:
1. Dont make enough independent revenue to sustain clubs
2. Are pseudo reserve grade meaning if you dont have an NRL club link up your non competitive and cant hold players
3. Are seen as meaningless and dont generate any interest

Small towns aren't going to be satisfied with 2nd division. Comp will always be small time. Better to have feeder comp. Imagine NRL having to worry about 2nd division clubs going bust?!

What are you talking about? I and Jim are not arguing against the feeder comp or proposing a new competition- this would be the feeder comp i.e an expanded NSW Cup. Instead of having for example Canterbury running a Canterbury RG side in NSW Cup they would base their NSW Cup team (hypothetically) in Coffs Harbour.

This addresses a couple of problems. Lack of investment in RL outside of major capital areas as well as providing an improved link between regional competitions and the NRL. One of the bigger drawbacks with the current structure is that if you are a talented young player in a regional area and you don’t have the fortune of being spotted at a young age, you get missed. Either that or you have to move to the city, before you are mature enough to do so in the hope that you will make it. The benefit of this model would be that these kids can stay in their home town or area. You can also get the benefit of second grade players playing with you or in your area and getting better experience, which hopefully will in turn improve the standard of local comps, which will also lead into more talent being produced.

Areas like the Riverina, Northern NSW aren’t particularly small also.

They not going to get that money plus league run over length of nz to Perth will be costly to run. NRL will have 10 teams it will be responsible to keep afloat.

This topic should be benchmark for this forum. If ppl believe this should & will happen they should be banned for being clueless.
A League covers all five metro areas plus NZ and gets about $40m a year for f**k all viewers on Paramount+

I'd imagine an NRL2 that has some of the smaller sides like Cronulla and Manly would be able to draw 150k subscribers. Add teams like Brisbane Tigers, Ipswich Jets, Logan Magpies and possibly Wynnum Manly and you've got a good fanbase.

A league clubs owned by private rich ppl as toy or long term investment. $40 million doesn't go far but a league far more prestige than 2nd tier.
NRL clubs demoted to 2nd division would lose all fans.

You'd put NRL2 clubs where there was no NRL clubs. That's the point!

A national second division could be played by as early as 2023 with Football Australia set to invest in the establishment of a professional football competition to sit below the A-League.
The first will be a national men’s second tier, potentially bringing clubs to new markets not covered by A-League Men teams as well as existing National Premier League clubs and former National Soccer League teams. One proposal could include promotion and relegation with the state-based National Premier League competitions but not with the A-League for the immediate future.

Football Australia says it has undertaken significant planning for a national second tier competition and has identified a number of models of how it could operate. Senior sources suggest a start date of 2023 is already being targeted. The organisation has identified the second tier as a priority to improve player development with more pathways and a larger pool of professional players, bridge the gap between the semi-professional state leagues and the A-League while also expanding the footprint of the professional game across the country.

It will be a dismal failure. Go ahead,
bookmark this post for this time in a year.

Imagine the hubris of an organisation that averages 5000 a game doing this.

Australian football fans are obsessed with being plastic Euro-trash

Soccer has private ownership & plenty of ppl who want a team. 2nd division will work in that sport

But nobody gives shit about 2nd division
Dont they? How do you know? I watched a Perth RL club in what was effectively the third division draw 3-4k fans to games. PNG get big crowds for Qlnd cup.
The places that dont give a sht are where there is a better alternative, ie an NRL club to support. When you dont have that then seconds tastes better than nothing!

On the assumption promotion & relegation will happen at some point. Your expensive comp goes nowhere

Great, they can draw small crowds. Sounds sustainable

It may well be, it may not and may achieve what they are trying to achieve, time will tell. Point is its not such a whacky idea! Didn't union have a national second division as well before covid hit?

Thast not what they are saying, there is no such assumption for what they are looking at.

Doesn't matter. Private ppl willing to invest & TV or streaming willing pay.
So soccer, that is well below RL here, can get backers and TV to pay but RL cant? How's that work?

Because soccer is long term investment with potential pro reg which means clubs can move up. NRL is closed shop. You expect ppl to invest in 2nd division nobody cares about..
