In saying that though how would you expect a competition that will be of a lesser standard to fund itself. This is the crux of your argument: the only time you can have a functioning second division or similar to this idea is if a) there is promotion and relegation attached to it like European soccer or b) it works as the feeder system to the main league like you see in some American sports such as Minor League Baseball.
So evidently you have to either make RL a promotion/relegation competition (which I don’t think will or should happen) or you get rid of Qld Cup/NSW Cup and current reserve grade structure and replace it with this or you expand and reshape NSW Cup/Qld Cup into a national type set up like this idea and make it the reserve grade.
There is really very limited value in setting up a completely new competition to sit below a reserve grade competition
Look that's the biggest challenge for sure. Its tied up with profile, interest, NRL commitment, sponsors, Tv, fan interest etc. It needs to be a legit contents that engages RL fans in the cities its played in.
It wont be anywhere near the size of NRl and nor does it need to be.
Understanding that the purpose is to bring professional RL to cities that are unlikely ever to get an NRL team, opportunity for clubs outside NRL to put themselves in the expansion window if NRL decided to go to more clubs and giving players and officials more opportunity to earn a crust from playing.
Sht if broke arse soccer can seriously consider a second tier I dont see why we cant
Again the problem with current set up is its reserve grade status meaning its incredibly hard for new areas to join as A) you have to have an NRL club link up or your not going to be competitive on field B) It has no interest to anyone as not a legit comp so does not generate any revenue for clubs C) Its 2 state based and largely not covering areas without NRL teams, because its a pseudo reserve grade
