I think normally Suity would be right, the minister responsible for the Transport portfolio should be handling the negotiations. However, in this case David Elliott has already announced he won't be contesting his seat at the next election. Leaving him to the remainder of the negotiations might be akin to leaving a pyromaniac in charge of a fireworks factory.... The merkin has nothing to lose, he might quite happily let it all go up in flames

These trains were safe from the outset. It is why they were purchased. The union didn't like the fact that they didn't need guards, so, they have gone on this mad campaign and are demanding you and I and the govt spend hundreds of millions of dollars to have the safe technology removed just so some guy can keep his job and stand at the back of the train.
The whole situation is ludicrous.
I notice that no one commented re my reply the other day that neither the tube in London, nor the Metro in Paris, or many other systems across the world have f**king lazy shit guards standing at the back of the train doing f**k all. Not even Victoria has that, which ironically, is ok with the RBTU in Victoria.
Go figure.

Worse still, the RTBU is doing everything they can to delay construction of the metro extension to Bankstown, applying work bans to that part of the infrastructure. Their sole aim is to make sure the current govt does not get re-elected. Nothing more.
Glassons is a f**kwit. If you Bart don't care that they are screwing us NSW taxpayers for hundreds of millions of $$, more fool you.

I don't think so.

He was well into negotiations with the union before he announced he was leaving politics. And, was extremely frustrated with how the negotiations were progressing.

One thing I will say is, the trains in question service stops/platforms that are not straight like your typical tube or metro stations. We're talking about outer suburban and regional stations that have curved platforms and in those cases, traditionally the guard's job has been to alight from their compartment after closing the doors and then do a visual check that nobody is stuck in the doorway or gap between train and platform. Thereafter they return to their compartment and signal to the driver to proceed. This is why the CCTV capability was introduced in the new fleet, so that the driver's can do the checks from their cabin and negate the need for a guard... So yeah, it's not exactly apples and apples when comparing to the Tube for instance, but there's also no doubt the concerns are around keeping union member's jobs and not driver and/or commuter safety as they assert....

I know all of that but he's a walking f**king disaster. Everybody is better off if he's nowhere near the negotiations from here on IMO.

I understand that, but I've heard both him and Glasson's interviewed on the radio lately. Many times. Only one of them comes across as genuine and honest, and it ain't Glasson's. Seriously, just look at their proposed strike campaign. They are getting desperate. And the public opinion is turning against the rail union.

But I know has the responsbility for making that stop... and they're up for election in March - well, except for Elliot, who is one of I think 9 ministers/senior MPs now who are jumping ship before it all sinks.

And Look at the quote bout expecting that Perrottet (or the FWC) will agree (or force) an outcome by the third week of that over-the-top calendar... it's a bargaining tool, that they've had to propose to use because they are bargaining with tools, and this government (inclouding Elliot) should have woken up and got the job done 9 months ago.

Nov 21 and Nov 25 will bring the network down to 30% capacity... so the government should (and will) be keen to give ground by those dates - if the FWC hasn't forced them to.

Remember all of the above actions are "protected" (approved) by FWC rulings, based on the current level and status of the government's "participation" in (as yet unsuccessful) bargaining on the issues at stake.

That is exactly the case. The new trains have the tech to do away with the guards.
The NW metro doesn't even have drivers and has been a massive success.
This is why the union are scared and are carrying on this campaign.
We need to metro-fy more lines.
We don't live in the 19th century anymore.

And, don't forget it was a Labor Govt that decided to rip out one of the largest tram/light rail systems in the world in the 1950's and replace it with buses. Look where that got us? Traffic carnage.
And what are we doing now? Replacing the Light rail system. And so, we should.

Maybe because he has very little skill in negotiating...?

Hence the call and need to get someone better/higher involved.

Give ground to what more than they already have? Lol.
And the union are happy to use Sydney commuters as pawns?
They are f**kwits and Glasson's only wants to get rid of the current govt.
His membership of the Labor party is a conflict of interest in itself with his dealing with the govt.

Well, the Liberal Party didn't start to even exist in NSW until 1945... so that's hardly something they (you) can claim is a decision they were opposed to.

Timeline sourced from: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04...-network-what-happened-curious-sydney/9610328

* In 1939, just as World War II was breaking out, the first tram line — the Manly system — was closed.
* During the 1940s the NSW Government commissioned experts from London to write a report on Sydney's public transport system.
* The report, put together by London Transport executives GF Sinclair, AF Andrews and ER Ellen, recommended [in 1949] the total closure of the Sydney tram network in phases, by 1960.
* By 1961 the last tramline closed and with that marked the end of Sydney's affair with the tram.

Pretty good article indicating the decades of disatisfaction with the old tram system that was decomissioned, and how similar things were happening at the tiem stateside.

And the Labor party ticked it all off. What a disaster that has turned out to be considering we are now trying to rebuild the system.

A mate of a mate works as a train driver. His words was they just want a bigger pay rise and government keeps f**king them around. He seemed to be clueless about unsafe trains.
