Minns rebuffs demands for new NRL stadiums

ByAngus Thomson

Premier Chris Minns has rebuffed calls from three powerful NRL clubs to spend taxpayer funds on upgrading their stadiums, telling national TV his priority is fixing the state’s schools and hospitals.
Speaking on Sunrise this morning, the premier was asked about comments in The Daily Telegraph this morning from the bosses of NRL clubs Manly, Cronulla and Wests Tigers are demanding the new premier commit to upgrading their suburban grounds. Here’s what he had to say:
We went to the election campaign, very clearly, with a mandate to fix schools and hospitals first. We’ve got $200 billion worth of debt in NSW. I’d love to be in a position where we could promise brand new suburban stadiums, but the priority has to be essential services in NSW. We made it clear before polling day and we can’t change our position afterwards. I’m happy to speak to sporting groups of all different codes and regions in NSW, but the priority has to be to turn around the performance of our hospitals and our schools. I think that’s what the taxpayers of NSW expect from the incoming government.

Manly’s Brookvale, Cronulla’s Shark Park and the Tigers’ Leichhardt Oval were slated for upgrades by the previous Coalition government, but then-premier Dominic Perrottet informed ARLC chairman Peter V’Landys in August of the government’s plans to scrap the $250 million pledge.

Makes sense further north but in Tampa Bay? And plenty of European stadiums have good roof coverage.

They need specialy designed roofs - either built on unique angles so the snow dislodges, or with heating pipes running through them to melt it slowly.

These two Canadian Football League stadiums (which would make decent templates for NRL stadiums while I'm looking) were designed with the kind of roofs to dislodge snow. They both replaced open-air (roofless) stadiums:

IG Field, Winnipeg
Mosaic Stadium, Regina

Really what’s the rationale beyond size to move to the MCG? It’s certainly not a better place to watch rectangular pitch codes than Accor- it’s bloody awful for that. No city in Aus is ever going to have a rectangular stadium at larger capacity than Accor.

Competitive tension with nsw to either pay more or do the stadiums

there’s been no contact with the arlc by the vic govt and vlanyds didn’t sound keen on it tbh

The only rationale is $$ or pressure on the NSW Govt to fund stadiums or upgrades to existing grounds , it would be a major embarrassment for the govt to not host the city & states biggest annual sporting event

The GF will be a pawn for the forseeable future now that the previous Liberal Govt reneged on the deal to have the GF in Sydney for 20 years or what ever it was , as long as the Stadiums were done.

Especially after nsw bid decent coin for the a league grand final

vlandys owes this govt nothing he should do the best deal for rugby league. The liberals aren’t in power now any goodwill he owes to them went when they got kicked out

getting another 800 million in stadia upgrades to keep the grand final in Sydney is a bad deal for league when they can sell it to the highest bidder

V'landys' constant media threats to take the Grand Final out of Sydney are disappointing and unproductive.

V'landys' flirtation with Melbourne as the home of the Grand Final this year is a slap in the face to fans of the game in the rugby league states.

The AFL won't take the Grand Final out of Melbourne no matter how much money is offered up, even by the other AFL states.
whats a slap in the face to fans of the game in the RL states ... certainly NSW.. is Govts reneging on deals to fund stadiums or upgrades to keep the GF in Sydney , If we need to use the codes GF for leverage then so be it

Yeah I agree that taking the game to Melbourne is a bridge too far, I get the leverage thing but its downright disrespectful to the fans and makes the administration look like theyre simply whoring themselves out to the highest bidder. Brisbane I don't mind, especially if the Qld sides are going strong, its a legit Rugby League town with a great stadium but playing it in Melbourne would make a laughing stock of the code.

Due to the noise they made over the Allianz Stadium rebuild and its cost, in the short to medium term, Minns won't be putting up money for stadiums. Otherwise it will backfire on them considering they carried on about how it should be spent on hospitals and nurses.

Getting money to host the GF? Yep, that's possible, but hundreds of millions for stadiums? Highly unlikely. Politicians rarely ever change their minds once they've stated his/her position publicly. Politicians regard it as losing face and credibility if they do (whether we think it right or not, that's how they come across).

how do they work out they have 35K more seats then Accor ?
unless they can force their stadium members to pay for their seat when Accor can't or won't ?

100K MCG 25K stadium members
82.5K Accor 18K stadium members
MCC would change their members a ‘special event’ fee of around $100 like they do for SOO. And if their 100k members did not take up the 25k seats, they would sell to general public.

A one off GF @ MCG would be massive. There are no public tickets available for the AFL GF so I reckon charged half (so around $180 - $200), you would easily sell out 100k. You could generate about double what you would at ACCOR, given the larger capacity and how cheap GF tickets are usually.

Surely however, unless the NRL actually does sell a GF, the NSW govt is not going to be fooled by PVL’s annual bluff?

They blinked last year when he said its gone to Brisbane unless the cheque book is opened up... we will never know how real the threat was as a result

Manly want 100 million to upgrade Brookvale. Well hello Manly is owned by Millionaires. Sharks want 100million to upgrade Shark Park. Well hello Shark Park is a privately owned ground. Tigers want 50 million to upgrade Liechardt oval. Well why didnt they spend their 60million dollar COE at Concord an put it to better use at Liechardt new grandstand an COE. GREED. Not one off these 3 teams deserve a cent off taxpayer money. They can use ALLIANCE ACCOR AN bankwest for there bigger games.

so can the Dragons for games in Sydney, save NSW taxpayers paying for Kogarah's upkeep.
Bulldoze it to the ground & erect housing there to ease the housing shortage

Origins go to melb

if it did go for the right money I’d be fine with it
An oval heap of shit like the MCG should never host any rectangular sport, whether it be union, league or soccer
origins

heck even kogarah is an oval
