This is a far greater loss making exercise then Manly or Souths.

This can't generate any substantial monies from gameday receipts, merchandise, local TV or likely from sponsors. And requires weekly specially chartered travel, accommodation and security.

This is whats been said for a while now, and if the arlc are accepting of it, it will surely be based out of cairns for the first 2-5 seasons, if only to garner coaches, players, staff to be operational, then the whole setup move back to port moresby after that, so thats their plan, which will definitely see most of the marquee recruitment drop off, when they do. but that wont matter as it will be up and running as they would want it already as the png club recruiting local talent and folks who are wanting to actually be on that team, not the pseudo pasifika that the arlc actually want. I dont see them moving back for a while they say they want it to be fulltime in port moresby, but they'll end up in cairns for a decade

They'd be very resistant to that, and believe that Albo and the government's support means that they're in the position to call the shots, which they kind of are if the NRL accepts that a PNG side is a necessity for geopolitical reasons.

They seem to be of the opinion that the only reason the team shouldn't be based in PNG is if the infrastructure to support the team doesn't exist in PNG. They are also of the opinion that they should have it all ready in time if they're given enough lead time, and that it'd only take a couple years to construct at most if not.

Put simply their ideal would be to launch the team in PNG from day dot, but if that isn't possible they'd want it written in stone that the side is to be based out of Port Moresby fulltime by X date, and that date would certainly come much sooner than a decade.

Govt is willing to underwrite the whole team, are you not comprehending this? Who the f**k is paying for that pathway system? The only reason this is going ahead coz RL gets paid for nothing and reaps the rewards that a new pathways gets built by the govt, the rest is inconsequential, if it makes money on its own then great thats a plus, you really not looking at this from a ARLC point of view are you?

From a government perspective the whole proposal is little more than hearsay and media talk. No proposal has been made, nor has it been funded.

None of the numbers that have been thrown around in the media would even come close to underwriting an NRL side, there's nothing concrete about funding for anything else like pathways and juniors, and there's absolutely zero chance that the government would 'pay' the NRL or 'RL' anything on top in the form of a yearly grant that they can use at their own discretion either.

None of it would be self sustaining either. In other words it'd all be run at a significant loss annually and the money for it's continued support would have to come from somewhere when the government funding was cut, which is inevitable. The NRL simply isn't in a position to support that kind of investment long term, especially when it's unlikely to make a return in this lifetime.

i do remember a few years back you yourself argued with me that the northern pride was extremely cowboys entrenched in all things north qld, and it would be insane for them that they would partner with another team... your tune has changed over time i see
