How much money has the QRL invested in the Northern Rivers region over the last 21 years?

It would be better to have a team in Wide Bay.
Not too sure, but it’s a straight fact that the QRL have valued having the Seagulls in their competition a lot longer than whole swaths of Qld. No judgement or agreement on my behalf, just the facts. I’d believe someone (actually multiple people) whose entire career is based on these decisions more than just some suburban hacks like you and I on this.

So let me get this straight, you see more value in Gympie having a team than Nundah? I hope for your sake you’re just trolling……..

he doesn't know shit, imagine claiming to be a fan of BRL and wanting Norths Devils to be kicked out from the QLD cup.

Tweed Heads Seagulls wanted to compete in the 2002 season. Their entry was denied. The only reason they were accepted in 2003 was because the Scorpions folded.

A team in Wide Bay would benefit rugby league in the region. The QRL was interested in fielding a team in Wide Bay over a decade ago, but no longer think it's viable. The Wide Bay Bulls were one of the teams that competed in the Winfield Statewide League.

Does the Queensland Cup need the North Suburbs Devils?

Attendances at Bishop Park have always been poor. The facilities are second rate compared to Redcliffe, Wynnum and Easts.

Rugby league fans from the northern suburbs would rather watch the Broncos play at Lang Park.

How far are Sydney and Brisbane people's heads up there arse thinking PNG is viable?

Out of touch inner city hipsters.

Today's events just showed how moronic the idea is

Doubt Tweed are getting kicked out or moving voluntarily to NSW Cup any time soon, hasn’t seemed to be an issue. Plenty of their fans and players would live on the Gold Coast side of the border anyway and there is definitely space for 2 teams in the Gold Coast / Tweed area. Even if it was an issue I’d say they’d just get around it with a soft rebrand to Coolangatta/Tweed or something like that, easier than moving to NSW Cup.

NSW Cup isn’t really set up for anything other than NRL reserve grade sides unfortunately. It would be nice to have places like Coffs, Wagga, Central Coast, Bathurst etc represented like Rocky, Mackay & Toowoomba are in QCup but they seem to be moving further away from that style of competition.

Wide Bay Bulls compete at junior levels, if viable it would be good to see them at the top level as it would essentially be the last piece of the puzzle by filling the gap between Sunshine Coast & Rockhampton. Darwin too, even if they start in juniors only like Wide Bay do currently. They’ll never have a top grade team unless the AFL really scrape the barrel.

As for the last statement that isn’t really unique to the northern suburbs of Brisbane. Not sure any need to be culled, Wide Bay or Darwin would make a neat 16 team comp, admittedly 17 or more and it starts getting more complicated but really where else are teams coming from? Pacifique Treize are the only other one I can think that were interested and if they ever reappear they would assumedly need to come with some funding from PacificAus Sports like Hunters and Silktails.

All that aside and circling back to PNG, Hunters running teams in CC & MM Cups would produce a better turnover of players to NRL clubs than the Queensland Cup side has ever managed IMO. Big difference between developing a player at 17-20 and trialling them in their early-mid 20s.

It's a pity the NSW Cup is a quasi reserve grade competition for Sydney NRL teams. It would be better for the game to make it a truly state wide competition.

QRL did speak with the NTRL about entering teams in the Queensland competitions a few years ago. I recall NT fielding teams in the Winfield Statewide League in the early 90s.

I don't understand why the QRL persists with having four teams based in the City of Brisbane. It would make more sense to shift Wynnum to Redlands and Souths to Logan. Magpies are playing a few games at Hertitage Park in the first half of 2024, but they're playing the rest at Davies Park. I don't see the point in playing at West End when Coorparoo is just a few kilometres away.

Wynnum were forming stronger ties with the Redlands around a decade ago. They were taking one game a season to Redlands and promoting Touch RL in Redlands. Their BRL team was called the Wynnum Manly Redland City Seagulls for a season or two.

The QRL said Wide Bay doesn't have enough players or businesses within its catchment to field a team just yet. It's a pity because a truly statewide Queensland Cup will be great for areas that will never have an NRL team.
