ANZAC Test axed?

Again, they are standardized because they serve as qualifiers for the WC and European Championship. And congrats you found one european team that has dedicated friendlies, the host of the tournament.

And yes you will find a soccer nation ducking out of international matches, I used them as an example: England leaving the home championship matches, and I wouldnt say international matches are the pinnacle of soccer, the world cup yes, but not them as a whole.

And again, Australia isnt ducking anything, they are just changing the date.
I found that the one nation that is actually able to play friendlies because they don't have other matches has done so? All other nations also play friendlies whenever they can. England have played four friendly matches in the last year in addition to 6 qualifying matches. I don't know what "home championship matches" you're talking about but there hasn't been a home nations tournament in soccer since 1983.

Your argument here seems to be that soccer nations only play friendlies when they have the chance to do so. Well yeah, of course, that's the whole point. Australia in RL do have a chance to do so in the mid-season window and don't have a chance to do so post-season, when they will be involved in tournaments. Do you think France or some other nation would schedule soccer international friendlies right in the middle of Euro 2016? Or go for 18 months without playing a single match like Australia RL are going to do? No, they played them whenever they had the chance. Trying to cram all the internationals into a short post-season window is ridiculous.

And apart from anything else, the ANZAC test isn't a friendly, it's a test match with a trophy available.

Moving Australia test matches to after SOO is common sense

Simple solution is NZ play England annually

Weekend could look like

Thu France v Lebanon
Fri NZ v England
Sat 3pm Cook Is v Niue
Sat 5:30pm PNG v Fiji
Sat 7:30pm Samoa v Tonga
Sun 4:00pm City v Country
Sun 6:00pm NSW v QLD U20s
Sun 8:00pm SOO

City v Country is a NSW Origin trial why play it in the middle of SOO? Unless you want to hoover up more PNG, Fiji and Tongans and prevent them from playing in pacific tests.

If the NSW selector cant pick a team from the last 13 NRL rounds, one more game wont help...

And if CvC cant justify its existence in its own right, then its not worth have.

the time is right to bring back the Anzac Test and play it on Anzac Day.

A game on anzac Day would be an ‘event’ game and would easily sell out Suncorp or Allianz. The rivalry could build to SOO like levels …..

Rugby Australia wanted to jump at the chance to play on Anzac Day but it looks like NZ have skittle those plans for now. The door is still slightly open for league to grab the chance to play on Anzac Day.

I spent 15-20 minutes just now trying to justify the return of the ANZAC Test on ANZAC Day, but then remembered rugby league journalists, SOO, Gus etc etc etc etc and yeh nah..

They won't bring it back or at least won't on ANZAC Day. The NRL currently has 3x locked in games for the day (Dragons v Roosters / Storm / Warriors) all that pretty much sell out and draw strong TV ratings, etc.

From a commercial standpoint you have a guaranteed 90K+ paying premium prices for the status quo, versus an event which historically at its peak drew 44K.

This. Anzac Day test is long gone and not coming back anytime soon. I can only see them adding NRL games around Anzac Day like an Anzac eve game in Canberra, Townsville or Brisbane every year.

Still I would love to see some mid season tests back but Anzac Day just won’t happen.

The 3 NRL games only attract an extra 35 k attendance than what they would normally get

A test match would get 50k at suncorp and could potentially get 80k at Accor

The big difference would be in the TV ratings, a test match would rate far higher than a Roosters V Dragons game. Do casual fans even care about this game ?

Putting internationals center stage and giving it a large audience would benefit the end of year tests with a knock on effect of larger crowds and viewers.

I can't see the sense of the current draw, we're missing out on having an international that would rate higher than NRL just so the Storm and Roosters get an extra 35k seats sold ??

Which game would Ch 9 prefer ? Dragons Roosters or Australia v NZ ?

The Roosters/Dragons, Storm & Warriors all charge premium prices for ANZAC Day, so it's not just 35K extra seats.

Prices are almost double normal prices & with the extra sales the clubs earn (both GP & Corporate), these matches are commercially worth about the same as 4-6 normal home games.

Unfortunately for a Test match there is no way the NRL could start pricing at $70 & even if we could and we did sell out Accor, we'd still make less money than those club games.

There is also no evidence we could sell out a Suncorp or Accor for an ANZAC Test. As mentioned, we played 17 previously and the highest crowd was 40K (which was actually played on May 5), the average was less than 30K.

The last time the Kangaroos played at a sold out Suncorp was the 2008 RLWC Final, the largest crowd the Kangaroos have ever played in front of at Accor was 30,245 in 1999.

The only two larger Kangaroos crowds in Sydney since then were both in 2008. We got 34K both at the SCG & SFS for the Centenary Test & RLWC opener.

TV ratings for the Roos are solid, when played on a Friday night, they often fall in the top 10 of all FNF matches of the season, but like all NRL games, when played during the day, audience numbers decrease. Again there is no evidence that it would significantly out rate the Dragons v Roosters game.

In terms of your question, which game would 9 prefer? They have been asked, every time they've asked for the NRL fixture.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for us to have the ANZAC Test again. I went to a huge portion of them, but I can appreciate the commercial realities that make playing on ANZAC Day not practical.

The better argument is to aim for the first weekend in May. The ANZAC Test games played in early May versus late April drew bigger crowds & better TV audiences and its not a day the clubs will push back on.

The examples you give of Anzac Tests attendance and viewership arent really relevant because they weren’t played on Anzac Day.

The Roosters Dragons attendance doubles, you’d expect the Anzac Tests attendance to double too.

Any ways, it’s just another example of club football holding international football back. Eventually Union will sort it out, they’ll fill Accor and if given the choice 99% of causal fans will choose to watch their country on TV over watching 2 NRL clubs. Another opportunity missed.
