and I never said his ability to identify players was shit during his whole tenure.

He cared about the 7 mins pathway to and from training.

for a nrl coach not to care about pathways and development is a huge blind spot imo

It’s up to those pathways players to make it into the NRL squad. Plenty of them have done it, including a few from the 2022 grand final side, and plenty more that turned out to be not good enough (e.g. Parry, French, Loizou).

Brian Smith created and nurtured the pathways through the first JETS program, he attended just about every junior rep game and knew the names of players prior them actually hitting junior reps.

Smith is a poor comparison to modern NRL coaches because he operated at a time when the coach was also the GM of the football department. NRL club staffs were tiny compared to now. It’s what made Smith so good, but the increase in staffing at all clubs eroded his competitive advantage.

Sure some never developed but we had so many coming through it was a luxury . Won’t say what happened with coaches after him, but the JETS program has only been instituted recently and we are now seeing the fruits of that.

every head coach worth their weight in salt would have an interest and an input ( albeit small one ) on the way pathways system is structured….

the old ‘not the coaches job’ is a pathetic excuse and I wouldn’t go near a head coach who wouldn’t or doesn’t want to take an interest in it.

That for me is the biggest frustration atm with the club.

How have our 2 best juniors that have come through the pathways in the past 10 years there development and footy nous fallen so far close to a reserve grade standard its incredible.

How is Arthur’s different from any other coach in that respect? You see all the failed Eels because you’re a fan, but other clubs have just as many. And don’t assume the ones bringing more juniors into first grade are better coaches. More likely is that their clubs are just better at poaching the best juniors.

btw I credited Arthur with the early development of Will and Dyl so he hasn’t necessarily dropped the ball all the way through in fact I’d even give him a little bit of credit for the development of Redradra even though he probably would of been a star anyway.
