Where you getting your figures from?

Afl cash deal was announced as $571mill a year
presuming $30mill is telstra cash that leaves $540mil for fta and pay tv.
Please break it up for us poor folks, what Seven pays and what Foxtel/Kayo pays. Don't you think Telstra is a bit light, they normally stump up $50m pa, just about for anything.

Your figures are all over lol

afl
cash and contra $640mill
cash only $571mill

nine is currently paying nrl $115mill cash + $15mill contra

So if telstra for afl is around the $30mill mark that leaves around $540mill cash for fta and ptv in their deal.

our cash deal is currently around $365million. It will need a 30% uplift to overtake afl.
Cash only includes Telstra cash

No one knows. We only know total cash. Hence why I asked where you were getting your numbers from.

hang on you’ve been saying since it was announced it was mostly telstra contra, now you’re saying telstra are paying a big wad of cash? Which is it?

I haven't at all commented on the AFL cash numbers for the deal they are in - I am waiting to see annual reports, while Wookie said 'deals go up as always, as the sun rises in the east, however this is the FIRST year of that deal which i haven't said anything about, just curios about the Telstra amount.

Other than 2020, the deals arent spread evenly each year, first year gets a big bump, then they start at a low point and reach their peak in the final year of the deal

I mean we are all just guessing until that AFL report comes in. Telstra were paying $50m a year, but the contra level in that was unknown and hasnt been known since 2020. The AFL isnt reporting an increase in contra, so maybe Telstras contra is being accounted for elsewhere.,

3 billion is more than the afl tv deal which is 580 million a year including contra.

Good to see they are talking about up to 3.2 billion

“Word is the new owner of FOXTEL – DAZN – has already shown its interest, which is no surprise considering the company is a sporting streamer and sees the NRL and AFL are the key to growth in this market. Rumours suggest the company is past the ‘just showing interest’ stage though.”

Implications of anti-siphoning changes:

“More of a concern for viewers, though, is the digital rights. The Albanese Government has failed to protect consumers who don’t watch TV through an aerial. Despite the anti-siphoning list in place to keep sport free, the Government has allowed digital rights to be excluded.

With more and more Australians watching free to air TV through apps like 7PLUS, 9NOW and 10PLAY, we could see a scenario where Nine owns the broadcast rights to the NRL but Netflix own the digital rights to those games.

That means viewers who don’t watch TV through an aerial would have to pay to watch the footy – which defeats the whole purpose of the anti-siphoning list.

Nine will fight hard for those rights – but it means they have to pay. So, if the NRL does break up the normal season from special events like the State Of Origin, it’s very easy to see why they might not have the cash for those special events, meaning they could end up on another network.

What’s good for the NRL is not necessarily good for viewers.”

$3-$3.2bn “within reach” according to O’Brien.
"Now, with strong crowd numbers, Magic Round viewership up 20%, subscription TV audience growth of 12.5% this year, and streaming on 9Now and Foxtel growing, NRL is entering a new era. Expansion to PNG and Perth, growing international competitions, and surging streaming figures mean the NRL is hotter than ever – and the market knows it".

Is this the first time we have seen a potential figure for how the NRL is doing on Subscription TV?

Published on Mediaweek and written by Barry O'Brien OAM - who is in the industry. Makes me feel like these figures aren't pulled out of thin air (even if he did get Andrew Abdos name wrong).

Also found an interview conducted with Barry O'Brien from earlier in the year -

As far as I can see, the NRL isn't a partner of his Media company - Atomic 212 - which is a good thing. Not just talking up a client they are working for.

No No NO. It does not work that way. As it was I had started to do some 'researching' and a came up with two FTA who have the right to show using Ariel AND free digital, ie like Nine Now, Seven Plus OR TEN Play. When they buy the THAT rights they can show in the the Digital stations. The NRL can and will decide if other companies can show THAT same game digitally also , like Foxtel?/Kayo do now being called simulcast. So we can sell to 2 FTA companies ie 9Nine and 10Ten where they show what the paid for. terrestrial and free digital. But we can make that Free digital not exclusive as it is now shown with paid Digital/Foxtel /Kayo, BUT we make paid Digital Foxtel/ Kayo ALSO non exclusive. Below shows a example.
Nine FTA Terrestrial
Nine free digital Nine Now
Nine Digital pay TV Stan

I have outlines how we can sell to 2 FTA, b4 ie Nine and ten. 4 Games

Now we move onto to the PAY Tv
We can also sell too 2 or more Pay TV .
Foxtel/Kayo have to go to the price that AFL deal which is $320 roughly , But this is what we want anyway and pay this amount fine. If Foxtel show no resistance and pay Top Dollar- well fine ( we need to have a Pre Season and End of season internationals , to sweeten the deal ) If we have to take a no or little increase from Foxtel/Kayo well we seek other payers. Foxtel can have 5 games without FTA coverage ,something like 5 games with no FTA coverage. It's just if they don't come up to our final money offer we say that's pay Tv non exclusive.

Amazon Prime. Paid 1 billion for Thursday NFL pa -as well as all international cricket for $80m pa.
W don't expect expect too much they can sell this a l brand enticer OR customer loyalty or a loss leader, or maybe a straight profit.
Maybe a 4 game Friday Night and Sunday Ticket for $50m/$40m pa
Disney- EPSN said it would like to get some Australian action
4 game Friday and Sunday ticket like above Amazon - if they pony up $50m/$40m pa
ESPN is on Foxtel/KAyo BUT Disney said they will a separate platform/payment for sport besides Foxtel if they buy some live sport.
Netflix- very likely a no go, but if package is produced by the NRL and it's a 4 game for $40m pa who knows.
Apple Tv- who in US bought Sunday Night Soccer and all other games in MLS, for about $250m pa.
Again long shot but a 4 games $40 m pa could be possible. One thing apple don't lack is money with a market cap in the TRILLIONS.
So put EVERYTHING IN PLAY, FTA, both terrestrial and Free digital, Pay Digital TV, BUT NON EXCLUSIVE ALSO.

Its a very weird consumerism position to think people are entitled to watch professional sport for free when we have to pay for pretty much everything else in life.

And from the usual crowds the we want less games, BUT they are enormous amounts of money$. As show the Internationals at end of year only apply to 13% of all registered players. So most NRL players don't play. However if we can have a Nine game rounds which is important because we can maximize the FTA and PyTv revenue.
If you want the pay TV subscription prices to come down, bring competition to the subscription market by having two or more 'Pay Digital provider. If the goal is $300and Foxtel?kayo won't pay for example, have 3 pay tv providers at $100mpa, same result. Obviously this is not likely but many their are many ways to skin a rabbit.
