Jesse not Casey
I thought he played OK against the knights. He definitely looks to have put on some bulk during the offseason which will help him. Whether he becomes a permanent player in the NRL is yet to be seen. He needs a consistent run in the top grade to judge that. I think his speed and elusiveness is needed. But Jenkins is ahead of him at the moment.

As of 2025, the Penrith Panthers are facing significant salary cap constraints, making it unlikely they could accommodate a high-value player like Payne Haas without substantial roster adjustments.

Current Salary Cap Situation

The NRL's salary cap for 2025 is set at $11.8 million for the top 30 players . However, reports indicate that the Panthers' squad is valued at over $14 million, exceeding the cap by more than $2 million . This overvaluation suggests that Penrith is already managing a tight salary structure, relying on various allowances and concessions to remain compliant.

High-Paid Players and Departures

Nathan Cleary, the Panthers' marquee player, is reportedly earning $1.3 million per season . While some reports suggest his earnings may decrease over time, his contract still represents a significant portion of the salary cap. Additionally, the Panthers have recently lost key players like Jarome Luai and James Fisher-Harris due to salary cap pressures .

Payne Haas's Market Value

Payne Haas is currently earning approximately $1.1 million per season with the Brisbane Broncos and is under contract until the end of 2026 . Given his performance and market demand, his next contract could exceed this amount, potentially reaching up to $2 million per season .

Conclusion

Considering the Panthers' current salary cap challenges and existing high-value contracts, it would be difficult for them to sign a player like Payne Haas without significant roster changes or player departures. Unless Penrith can free up substantial cap space, accommodating Haas's salary appears improbable.

(Jesse) McClean reminds me a lot of Critta in terms of size and how he moves. Remember that Critta had some moments too as a young player (was Waqa’s speed-bump one night) but was generally in a winning team and therefore under less pressure. When we have been on top McClean has looked really good.
If by “Critta” you mean Christian Crichton, then yes, I agree
