Looks like Mal's been shafted!
Wayne Bennett is reportedly now favourite to be appointed the Kangaroos coach for this year’s Ashes tour of England when the ARL Commission meet in the coming days.
A
rule change would have to be enacted to rubber stamp South Sydney coach Bennett for the role, with club coaches currently prevented from taking on the national team job.
According to
CODE Sports, Bennett is the clear frontrunner, but Storm legend Cameron Smith and former Broncos coach Kevin Walters are also contenders.
The Kangaroos position became vacant when Mal Meninga accepted a job to become to coach of the Perth Bears, who will enter the competition in 2027.
Howver veteran journalist Andrew Webster believes Meninga has a right to feel aggrieved, given he had to relinquish the Kangaroos gig after landing the Bears job.
“There’s a commission meeting and I expect Bennett to get the job but I don’t say it with any great certainty given the way this has played out,” Webster said on
Saturday League Kick Off.
“The problem is, if they’re going to go for Bennett, why not just give it to Mal in the first place?
“I have no doubt that Mal will be very upset if Wayne Bennett gets that job because they said you can’t take the job because you’re going to Perth. It’s a very shambolic situation.”
Brad Fittler sensationally rejected the Kangaroos job earlier this week, citing he didn’t have the time required to “do the job justice”.
