Again that might be the case, doesn't invalidate the point.
The point is just prior to Union's RWC in Oz in 2003 ,we were constantly ear bashed that their code will overtake rugby league and become the no 1 sport in NSW & Qld and the No2 in Victoria/WA/SA .
Some even suggesting rl would wither & die.
Remember visiting wife's relos in Auckland "eons" ago, driven near Eden park ,male driver noted this is where the real rugby is, no one cares about rl . Being a courteous guest I remained calm & did not respond.
ARU officials with all their so called business acumen created a huge debt by incompetent spending ( hello Folau) ,putting a team in Melbourne which was supposed to make the Storm redundant and the result the Rebels are kaput.
Now union will no doubt get big crowds with their RWC with many travelling supporters. Then after the event down under things return to normal, just like Olympics.Enjoy the moment.

I think union and league will largely continue as in Australia. League built their product slowly following the Super League war and it has been a massive massive success that is undeniable. I also think the move to diversify revenue streams more is a good one.

RA and the others involved in the new world championships, run in between world cups, will make big profits. I believe the Saudis are paying about 800m to host the final in 2028 and 3032 ? Crazy money. Rugby’s new sugar daddy :D
I can't see it sustaining but hopefully the money is put away if it goes in. R360 is a complete nonsense imo.

Rugby Union needs to condense the global calendar, it's a complete mess.

And just like 12 years ago on here, I predict we'll be having the same conversation in 12 years here.
Super rugby in Australia by then will probably be on a semi professional basis

Can’t play games at Concord oval anymore either

You did well to bite your tongue. I wouldn't have, especially since you were in Auckland where RL is very popular.

2 more tries for Nawaqanitawase

Seriously give him overs now so he doesn't get poached by Rugby Australia and used as a marketing tool for the Rugby Union World Cup in 2027. Paying him extras now will be worth it.

Dunno if he counts as a rookie anymore but he should be dally m rookie of the year

Wasted on the wing

He troubles defences in league that’s a rare talent for anybody let alone a union player with limited experience

He came to league to “spread his wings”. Apparently the Waratahs played the British Lions on the weekend but you wouldn’t know.

They were paying him 300k before and now they want a bidding war

Every half decent Union player should just go the nrl and then get the aru to pay overs

Would save them doing any junior development at all

Any news on Lions viewing figures in either Aus or UK?

I can tell you, even though tour matches have now begun, other than on the dedicated Sky Sports channels, it’s getting pretty much zero coverage or reach across the general population here in England.

Been on Stan which is a tiny network which has little other sporting content

Ratings could be as low as 80k for games

The tests are on the main channel but up against nrl and afl games on pay tv

Given the wallabies test against Fiji got 280k you have to wonder

750k would be a great result for them

Also if that DT article is accurate it shows that the ARU have learbned nothing in the last 20 years. Just a "rinse and repeat" of what they have done whilst ignoring the mess it put them in in the first place.

Roosters becoming a feeder club for Union.

If he goes back to union, which he probably will, that’ll be the 5th player in 2 years the roosters have lost to Union ( Jorgenson, Manu, SuaallI, Fitler Jnr ) and they would have lost Angus Crichton too if Rugby Australia hadn’t botched the deal at the last minute.

Why does this only happen to the Roosters ?

Yeah they haven`t learnt a thing, do they really think he`s going to change anything if he goes back.
Not having Nawaqanitawase isn`t the problem, their game is the problem.

Look, like it or not the Roosters are a glamour club, so are the Broncos, and if you`re a glamour player and you leave them who do you play for, basically the rest of the NRL are suburban teams. Players who see themselves or who are told they are superstars don`t want to go to suburban clubs. They want a bigger stage.
What the NRL needs is more glamour clubs, Melbourne if they can establish themselves further could be one, hopefully Perth, but we need more `glamour` clubs who these players can go to.

Because they are the Eastern Suburbs Roosters (current naming convention aside) and the ARU think everything outside of the Eastern Suburbs is a desolate wasteland traversed by barbarians, criminals, monsters and worst of all, the working class.

In the Irish Independent, Rúaidhrí O’Connor said a number of Lions players had gone to watch NRL in Sydney on Sunday.

“The Lions is grabbing attention, but league and Aussie rules remain the big shows in this neck of the woods to the extent that the Wallabies kicked off their only game before the series, against Fiji, at 1.30 in the afternoon to avoid a television clash. Maybe, on reflection, they’d have preferred a smaller audience.
On Wednesday, the Lions will go head to head with the State of Origin decider and there’s only going to be one winner in the battle for Australian eye balls." he wrote.

What’s the level of NRL coverage like in the UK ? Plenty of insane tries being scored. Been great to watch. Was over there during the ODI cricket World Cup when England beat NZ on a boundary count back. They moved the final to free to air . Media over there got excited but most of the taxi drivers were unaware it was even being played.
