I thought that the game was within reach yesterday and faded when Brown went off. He should have played 80 in some other capacity. Walker was lock but doing 5/8 stuff to compensate for Joash and maybe Brown should have taken over that rotation.
Agree with Walker compensating for Papalii. Joash is not a 5/8 and never will be. Guys like Hayne and Ponga never really made the successful switch from fullback to 5/8. And they are bigger and more skilled than Joash . Do we think Joash has more chance than them?

Yesterday's game is the one that has concerned me the most all year.

It has been easy to see the "through line" of all Ryles' decisions this year and as frustrating as some losses have been, we can see the end goal.

But yesterday seemed to indicate that Ryles himself is fumbling in the dark a bit at this point.

The game plan was wrong for the players we have out there and the stage of their careers - this means that he either persisted with a game plan that is not right for the playing staff, or he needs new playing staff.

If it is the former, then it is a sign that he is misreading the development of the players, because the wrong game plan and structure can inhibit their development. If it is the latter, we are not seeing much by way off an enhancement of the roster at this point.

There is time and I get we must be patient, but yesterday was a real concern.
I think he stripped it right down at the beginning until we got our defense right

When that finally stuck in, he introduced free flowing side to side movement and that didn't take long to get down pat.

Last 2 games he's allowed the offload and that's where alot of our errors are coming from as everyone has a license.

Maybe he thought we can't beat Penrith playing Penrith game so allowed it.

I think only certain players should be allowed to offload and not every play. It's picking the right time

And we still having stopped giving serious penalties away.

He is trying to progress this style but i think he has to control it by limiting who can do it as they get into a touch footy mode

I really wish junior had a run first mentality. I liked seeing big sam just run straight and hard

Juniors pass to walker in front of the sticks was just stupid

I get that Russell isn’t a megastar but he certainly doesn’t do anything but try his ass off in defence and attack. Sure, he can get better at setting up his winger but he is NOT the reason we are not winning games.

I’d take him over Penisini any day. If he was playing at the Storm we’d all be admiring what a strong player he is.

King, Russell is mistake free, very capable. He is never going to be a star, but f**k me there are worse Centres in the NRL

Can't break the line
Can't draw and pass
Slow off mark
No power
Defense is solid

He is the definition of a back up

Penisini is making errors. If he can fix that he is miles above Russel. He has raw power and would be top 5 strongest centres in game. He just isn't fast and playing dumb. But still a damaging runner.

Yep Junior was back to the 23/24 Junior yesterday where he wanted to be a halfback.

It was rubbish the previous 2 months he had played himself back into form playing like a front rower.

Next week will be an interesting to see if Ryles pulls him back into line.

Yes ultimately it was the errors / low completion rate that gave Penrith way too much opportunity and momentum after oranges.

If I am dropping players it’s to eliminate errors, but not to bring in a player from reggies for the sake of it. Guymer gets hate, but nobody in reggies is going to make 54 tackles.

Samrani played on the edge in Cup and was average. He was trying to throw passes in the grapple and they were ending up on the grass. Gideon looks like he might have f**ked something, so maybe he gets a chance anyway.

Jack will get suspended apparently ? and Luca is not ready.

Lol. Yeah Dylan was so effective at hooker.

Game changed when -
*Nathan come on...... Your allowed to say it

i see Joey Johns had his feelings hurt that the Parra fans booed Chinboy when his face popped up on the big screen while on the bench.

Like honestly it was a bit of theatre and Cleary stuck it up us in the 2nd half.

All's fair Cleary showed why he is still one of the best club halfbacks going around.

Penisini Mateale Latu all are not going to make it as NRL players and there are better players in Flegg..
If they were better, they would be playing reserve grade with Mataele and Latu. If they were really great they might even be playing first grade with Penisini.

We can piss and moan about the ref all we want but just we ain't good enough atm.

Until we get rid of the dumb errors the referee's ain't my real concern.

Its been known for ages the teams on the bottom don't get the 50/50s until we get ourselves off it were going to have to cop it.

The try on halftime should have been stopped it was 1 play that had to be stopped.

From that moment we crumbled once we got behind on the scoreboard.

The JAC play the ball was the 2nd time he has been pinged for that this year and both times the ref was Peter Gough as it happened at Magic Round very early on against the Sharks in the first 10-15 mins and the Sharks scored straight after.

Now surely next time we get Gough as the ref.

Ryles/Coaches/JAC should be all over this attention to detail stuff.

Because clearly Gough has on his little tip sheet when he is ref that JAC doesn't play the ball correctly so his looking for it more then other players. His the only ref that has pinged him this year.

Someone told me last night he actually got warned once before he pinged so it’s not that hard to fix.
I don’t know if he was warned but ref said after penalty he let someone (presumably JAC) get away with one before. But if it’s based on some preconceived notion of JAC doing it regularly then that’s bullshit. That’s how unconscious bias is formed, that leads to the “better” team getting the calls.

Refs are so focused these days about not being fooled by players/struggling with speed of play, that they simply neglecting just making consistent calls. It’s a trap of professionalism, trying to be ahead of the players. The refs and NRL at large are the auditors of the game. They’re meant to be there to just call the rules, not guess when players might break the rules.

I also think we should go back to 2 refs. Not the shitstorm “let’s switch sides on the run” that it was. One ref as normal in defensive line, the other just observing the ruck. They don’t switch (other than ref game ending injury), the ruck ref only calls infringements in the ruck and the main ref should mostly defer if he does observe potential ruck infringements.

I don’t know what to do about forward passes. And clearly the NRL don’t either.

The players I named are not going to be first graders. Ryles needs to do what the club has done with Tuivaiti but make sure they are signed up ffs!

The game changed when we turned the ball over one too many times. It wasn't Cleary that made Paulo and Williams let a centre run straight through them. It was fatigue.

Nah it changed when we didn't clean up our errors and defense went to shit.. See the Tago try..

We had plenty of errors in the first half but stayed in it by not having shit defense.

In a squad of thirty there would be plenty of merkins who won't become first graders. Do you really think you're going to fit a dozen elite juniors in the bottom of your top 30? These merkins already get paid like first graders. That's why the teams that sign them are forced to play them in first grade before they're ready. Because they are taking the salary of a first grader.
