Our future 6

During yesterdays press conference my take is:

Ryles was being diplomatic — trying to encourage Joash and back his players — but I don’t believe he sees Joash as the long-term answer at 5/8.

He’s just working with what he’s got. Our recent pursuit of Galvin suggests Joash is more of a fallback option because we haven’t been able to land a proven 5/8 or someone with greater upside, now.

Not really, you chase what is available at the time. The CEO mentioned in his recent interview how to structure cap expenditure. X dollars on top 4 players, X dollars on spine etc etc

Obviously we were very keen on Galvin, but when that didn't work out, we were still looking. Then TDS became available. So we decided to spend more on that spine position and less on 5/8. But we need to offset that with a cheaper 5/8.

I am sure we will consider other options if they became available (still reckon Pezet may be a chance) but no where near in the Galvin price range.

And there is no way Ryles gives Papali the 5/8 spot, backs him as the future in the press conference and extends him, if he didn't see him as a genuine option.

MITS

You’ve been around. Is he better at the same age as Tim Smith or Blake Green who were great as juniors and both ‘made it’ or is he more like a Kris Keating, Steve Witt or Michael Witt type?
Too early to tell, he has played a season in SG Ball and is playing up 2 years or more in Flegg at the moment.

He is quick and plays what he sees.

yeah, but it's not about what the players think of the suits, it's what the suits can do to convince them to come over, and in some cases not even about the $$$ either.
Sure. I just meant that a lot of them probably half make their minds up based on what mates they have where, and what other players have said about the set up and culture - more than maybe anything the suits can say to seal the deal.

Unless you're Gus and have those special Chinese meals whenever needed.

Papalii is obviously going to be given a shot until someone else better is available.
If that player is a current junior, then we’re either going shit or that junior is way ahead on development.
If that player is external signing:
For 2026 - then you’re looking at Galvin type availability and perceived improvement over Papalii
For 2027 & beyond - would just need to be better than Papalii

I am not sure we (the Forum, not the club) should be writing Ronnie Volkman off just yet. He had some huge wraps on him went he initially signed with the Dragons for 2024 and there was interest from a few clubs for 2025 before we signed him. Yes, he needs some work but potentially he has a future in FG given Warriors, Dragons, Sharks, Dolphins, Sea Eagles and us, have all shown interest in him.

His kicking game in reggies last week was killer.

I have written him off. Good backup who you want to play around 5 first grade games a season. Same with Footy Dean.

Given the time of year and proximity to season 2026, I think we all should accept (like Ryles) that the only possible alternate #6 to Papalii is perhaps for 2027.

So long as Moses stays fit and our 2026 edge forwards and centres lift their game, then I'm happy we don't get desperate and pay overs for an over-rated option (like NSW Cup Galvin or Knights-bound Brown).

If AOB gets the punt, Ponga quits, Dylan is having reservations and the new coach whoever that may be cannot believe they’ve paid that much for Brown for a decade who isn’t 100% committed and just wants the cash, I can see a world where our 6 next year is still Dylan Brown. Stranger things have happened…

Only if Newy want to chip in $800 000 p.a. cos Dyl aint worth a cent over $500 000 atm.
Even that's a stretch.

If both parties mutually agree to dissolve/terminate the agreement, its null and void (Just like Lomax's was with the Dragons - we didn't need to match his existing contract value, and they didn't need to cover the difference).

It's the most unlikely of outcomes, but it isn't an impossible thought.

Yeah if that happens and even if it’s mutual between Newcastle and Brown, I reckon the value we would place on Brown would bring a lot of other teams into the market.
At $500k, at least Tits, Manly, probably Dragons, Kiwis, maybe even Smugs and Souths, even Rorters probably ask the question. Even then maybe he just goes Newcastle then runs to Perth

I genuinely dont think Dylan wanted to leave - but the value and length of the offer was just unable to be turned down - everyone from the media, to his manager, family, friends, and probably his own teammates would have told him just couldn't turn it down and needed to take it. I'm certain had Newcastle offered that salary but only over 4-5 years he would have knocked it back - it wasn't about the money per year, but the certainty on the duration of it.

Yeah but I also get strong suspicion that Ryles didn’t want him at the money we were paying him which created the ease for Brown to leave in first place. Even if he did want to stay, I don’t think we’d be willing to pay him what he could achieve elsewhere, even if that is also substantially below what Newcastle are paying him. Players do strange things sometimes but I can’t see someone giving up $1.3m for less than half that even if he really loves the club

Yeah I get all that. That's just what my position would be to both D.B. and Newy if ever the idea was floated.
I fantasized about being MON and now you have exposed me lol.
I reckon IF Dyl has any reservations about going there, the 1.3m p.a. will override those reservations for at least a few years. That contract surely has more clauses than a W.E.F. convention at Davos.
Anyway, f**k him. He's not that good and IF he didn't think he owes this club better, for all the reasons that have been discussed previously (ad nauseum) on here, then he must be a real shit merkin as far as I'm concerned.

And they'd all be more than welcome to him. As far as me being MON for a few mins goes anyway.

Unfortunately, if you met him in person, you'd probably say he's a very nice bloke. But being " a nice bloke" does'nt win footy games or justify his pay packet.

We need to change those locks as soon as Brown goes through the out door. Hasn't delivered any where near his current pay packet since his incident at the Sheaf.
