my problem with it is it opens the door for refs (and the NRL) to manage games, manage results. The ref never has to answer for or justify 6 again's. I don't necessarily think that is happening but it's always in the back of your mind watching some games.

That could happen. As the game grows bigger than can become an issue. The NBA in the US has had that problem for years now.

Ball in play alongside fatigue has made NRL better in my eyes so I go with it. If someone suggests a better direction then I'd support that too. But the difference between our sport now vs 5 years ago is too much to ignore. The sky is the limit.

Just don't want to see Cameron Smith's son in 20 years holding up the whole f**king game to have a chat with the ref over some marginal offside decision. Even worse Tedesco's kid is captain in the same game. Days of our lives stuff.

Was PVL really a little Greek kid at one time ?

He talks it up like a loud mouthed Yank …

I always feel you should do your talking after … particularly about something they have underwhelmed previously
PVL is obsessed with the AFL and is taking a very big game.

If we really want to compare deals, we need to apply a little indexation. Say, 3%. The splits the AFL’s $4.5m deal as follows:

2025 $587m
2026 $605m
2027 $623m
2028 $642m
2029 $661m
2030 $681m
2031 $701m

If was apply the same to the NRL for the next deal, just beating the AFL:

2028 $643m
2029 $662m
2030 $682m
2031 $702m
2032 $723m
2033 $745m
2034 $767m

So, getting more than $643m does not necessarily beat the AFL. It needs to be well over $700m per year.

He must be very confident he is gunna beat it the way he is talking ..I still wouldn’t trust what the broadcasters are telling him in these meetings until the deal is done …they have been screwed over before …

Personally …if they announce $600m a year I’ll be happy …. The AFL needs more money to run their game with the bigger player squads, losing $50m a year and counting on AFLW, and money pits in NSW and QLD they seem determined to keep digging

if you want a faster game and more fatigue... and i can't believe i'm agreeing with something Andrew Johns suggests but reduce the players down to 12 on the field. I also wonder if going back to a 5m rule would stop slowing down tactics.

nah leave it at 13 on the field but if you want more fatigue brought in, lower the amount of interchanges from 8 to 6.

We're in a good place at the moment. I like the balance. Might be something to revise in the next 5 years especially as teams increase their fitness and endurance.

AFL expenses well exceed ours. More teams, particularly women’s, more games consequently, much larger playing squads and from what I’ve been told huge expenses for the dozen or so umpires that parade around like peacocks each game. All that for an ugly game supported by rednecks.

I don't think the NRL has ever done a proper tender process for the rights in the past.

I suspect you might be right there … when News Ltd owned 50 percent of the game , it made things difficult no doubt …

The history hasn’t been great …

You had ex News employee David Gallop being told what to accept by News, and David Smith had a shocker too when he lost control of his own product and Nine started selling games to Foxtel, and of course last time the rollover of price agreed by PVL was his worst decision he has made in the job …

that’s why I’m struggling to believe they will get the deal this time , although they deserve it

There was a little AFL puff piece on channel 7 Sydney News last Sunday night about how the AFL was taking over Western Sydney. A handful of Giants’ players were helping out with a kids’ AFL training session at Baulkham Hills. I suppose they have to have stuff like that as channel 7 have the rights but it’s interesting to note that NRL news always gets prioritised in their sports bulletin in Sydney at least. I assume that’s the case in Brisbane as well.

Actually channel 7s NRL sports coverage in its Mon to Friday news bulletin in terms of content and time compared to channel 9s is vastly superior . Channel 7 sports reporter Mel McGloughlin seems like a genuine league supporter.
Isn’t Mason on there too

That’s not how indexation works and the afl deal isn’t linked to cpi increases

Also need to factor in seven year deal v five year deal

But the next nrl deal will exceed the afl deal

Maybe going to 12 would be fair seeing as no one will ever see a 13 as good as Yeo again

Plus
- replace the scrum when the ball found touch
This rule change was a mistake. And entirely unnecessary. The PTB is not a set piece, it ought to carry degrees of momentum from the previous play.

A one-out hit-up off a static midfield PTB against a fully-set defence is a dreadful way to restart the game. Plays 2 and 3 of the set are usually no better.

They're still trying to find the balance. That's why things like the no penalty failed drop out have been brought in. But the game is much better to watch now with far more games going to the wire or at least not being blow outs.

I love defensive games but it got to a point where it was just cynical to watch. People want to see the backs in the open and doing ridiculous things. It's proven in the ratings as well.
Went to like this and saw I already did.

Exactly.
Whose idea was this rule change? It was absurd. They should not just get rid of it but who ever asked for it to be brought in should be cancelled and a list made of whoever their friends are.
