Exactly - don’t kick as you can give away a 7 tackle set on the 20 which can be a killer. But how about throwing the ball around a bit when you are 10 metres out
I do understand the thinking behind not putting a kick into the in-goal and risking a line drop out being 50-50. I guess I don't really understand us having a bit more intent to attack in those couple of sets in the lead up to the last tackle, especially after turning down a shot at goal which probably would have been the ultimate defensive play. Weird

The drop out takes more time off the clock, yes 50/50 but less negative play. It's knowing the score and time left, game management stuff.

I am really disappointed after the loss and how the season is falling apart

I have mixed feelings about the game last night, we did better than expected with all those players out.

But we could have or maybe should have done more when we were pressing their line several time with Kafusi in the.bin.
I didnt expect a win with so many out, but disappointed when so close.
These are the games pre season/round 1 that we thought we would lose, but we scrapped together and normally won the close one up until Barnett then Metcalfe injury.
Game management didnt help. You know Cooper Cronk ices that game.

Taking the 2 to go to a 4 point lead (and immediately give the Dolphins the chance to win the ball back in our half) would’ve been bizarre imo so I’m not going to criticise them for that

Yeah, I never even considered that was the play. You kick that, they get field position and regather the kick-off (the Phins challenge really well) and score to win, it gets heavily criticised.

I do dislike the lack of kick on the final tackle, especially if that is an avoidance of 7 tackles.

But we back ourselves to gather the re-start, complete a defensive set coming out of our half, get a big Boyd punt on the sixth, and pin the Dolphins in their twenty. We may've got a penalty as the Dolphins try to force an error.

Two minutes chewed up, four points in front, Dolphins desperate, and, unlike the last minute last night, they're at the wrong end.

We're torturing ourselves with this post-game stuff!

Want more torture? Cronk brought it up again, says Leka should have got up on that final play. And as much as we didn't discuss it, is he wrong?

Sucks to admit but maybe Cronk has a point.

Dunno what was wrong with Leka - at first glance I thought it was extreme cramp (?) which is debilitating for sure... but at the same time, I've seen some pretty busted up people somehow scrambling back into their line in that situation.

DWZ dragged himself into position on one leg v Penrith. Ultimately didn't work, but he was there.

It was exceptionally poor from Leka and honestly it does make me look at him a bit differently. If it's cramp or an injury of some sort, you try to drag yourself back into the line. In the absence of any foul play from the opposition, to even contemplate trying to get play stopped there is either incredibly stupid or gutless.

I prefer to think it was stupid rather than gutless and a mistake he won't make again.

On the actual match-winning play I don't think Leka could've done anything because obviously he was miles offside to the point where he probably gets binned if he gets involved. The error was staying down initially.

Just went back and rewatched the footage... doesnt look great TBH.

There's a period where a trainer's with him and potentially telling him to stay down. And also another point where he starts to get up but then lays back down when they switch back his way, presumably to avoid interfering with play.

But before all that, just after he'd made his last tackle and before the trainer came out, there was a window where it was just him and play had shifted well right. That was decision time for the young fella.

If so, play stupid games, win stupid prizes
If so, that would be really, really dumb. That's a massive Hail Mary to think you're going to get a ref to stop play in the final play of the game because you may or may not be injured.

I watched it again and he sort of arched his back, as if to try and get up, but then doesn't. I'm just going to presume it was just a brain freeze, a really dumb idea to stay down and not push through whatever pain was involved. Surprising too, from such a seemingly smart footballer. Even if he does get involved and it's a penalty, that's a win - play stops, OK he's probably binned, but we can reset for one play. And if the trainer said stay down, that's the second dumbest trainer-based action of the weekend)

I think Cronk is exactly right. Leka just needed to get up and cause some sort of disruption, legal or not. Just try. If he'd got up and got binned, or they scored, whatever.

Yeah good point on DWZ. Even if it is cramp, and you're a body in the way on one leg or whatever, it could potentially make a difference
