Rumours and Stuff

I read something on the interwebby thing this morning that said we were looking at some of Brisbane's aging players as stop-gaps for a year while our youngsters come through. No names we mentioned and I am not aware who from Brisbane is off contract and unsigned by there you go... it is a totally unsubstantiated rumour but that's what this thread is for.

And I’ve got to believe given all the other player movements this year, whoever we sign is at Ryles’ blessing rather than lol trolley MON & Jim’s Mowing. Same as when BA was here. This isn’t like Hollywood sports where owners buy and sell then the coach finds out when the play is/isn’t at training. NRL works slower than that so the coach will find out before it’s finalised, and if club went ahead regardless, that’s a deeper issue than one bad player

Several posts around that suggest we are signing Jack Bird to a 2 year deal. FMD , surely not, that would be the final nail in the coffin of R&R and their ability to build a roster annd identify recruits.
I’m going to quit the internet and start a new life in the Caribbean if this is true

But what’s their track record of bad player signings?
They’re certainly a bit too risk adverse I think, and they’ve definitely missed opportunities and perhaps some of the resignings have been bad, I think resignings are a different kettle, but I can’t recall a bad signing. Maybe I’ve scrubbed it from the memory banks.
Murchie, Momoseia, Harper, Cini, Rodwell, Lumelume, Mulitalo , Ogden and others. Then look at who we lost in 2022 and replaced them with who?

Just an honest questions, do you think any of these were signed as starting 17 players or were they squad fillers?
Cmon, they replaced players who started and all of them played NRL. May have been impacted by the coach and cap constraints, but it wasn’t and isn’t good enough really as extensions and wages that impacted are on the HOF and staff.

If the signings are sheeted on to the coach, what the heck does the recruitment manager do at the club?

Was relying on memory and at my age that can fraught with danger, anyway the point was they were all signed to replace the players we lost at the end of 2022. Dejean Asi also played NRL and was handy, enough said about most of them.

Cini, Lumelume & Mulitalo weren’t in top 30 from memory.
Rodwell was a junior and wouldn’t have been in top 25.
Ogden I thought was actually pretty handy when he was called upon. Plus I doubt he was on a lot.
Murchie, Momoisea & Harper played a combined 16 games and didn’t last a season. And at a guess Harper would’ve been highest paid and I doubt he would’ve broken the bank. If those 3 are the worst signings… we weren’t shit in 2023-24 because of those 3.
Shit signings for me are Sandow (although I maintain we got really f**ked by shoulder charge change) & Evans (and even that is partially in hindsight).

Now if it’s not being as calculated on resignings then I agree they’ve been failing hard BUT given the start of this year and Ryles having big impact on moving on established players then I’d say BA was given likewise discretion. The problem would then be MON didn’t temper it/negotiate better deals.

Sorry Delboy and with all due respect:

Murchie - signed for 2023 and played 5 games off the bench before never being seen in FG again.
Momoseia - signed for 2023 and 2024, picked for Round 1 after Lane was injured in trial game and lasted 3 games off the bench before being dropped and never seen in FG again.
Harper - signed for 2024 (not 2023) and played 2 games before being moved to the wing to cover for Simmonson and for Talagi to debut. Played a total of 8 games and then no more FG before being released.
Cini - as above (never played NRL)
Rodwell - signed and debuted in 2021 for 1 game before playing 4 more games in 2022 and then released to Superleague in 2023.
Lumelume - signed to a train and trial in 2023 and played 2 games, not given a top 30 contract.
Mulitalo - played one game in Round 19 in 2024 (not 2023) and not offered a new contract for 2025.

I agree that our R&R and HoF could have done better than they have over the last few years sure, but at least try and be accurate with your claims. Only 2 of the players you listed actually signed contracts for 2023, both played off the bench and both played no more than 5 games for us.
