I thought that was a union comp judging by op comments
Look at the numbers on the back of the players, the opening ones are league as is the last one.

Nrl rated 12 million in nz last year

Doubt super rugby or all blacks combined did that

Dazn may see value in having all the worldwide tv rights for league or maybe it’s bs

Even if sky have no competitor the prospect of more high rating content should be worth something

And despite generating 12 million ratings the nrl tv deal is still half what super rugby got

And the Christchurch nrl team also has value for Aussie network via the extra game each week

Dazn did take a look at the union in nz. Maybe they thought 90 million was too much.

I know you like to do cumulative numbers but league doesn't "rate" higher.

12m is roughly around 400-480k viewers a week and the majority of that is the Warriors. And the majority of the Warriors audience is crossover audience with rugby.

The ABs v Boks match had 1.3m viewers and apparently the first Bledisloe had more. On any given weekend during Super rugby the top Super match outrates the Warriors, and on weekends with two local derbies there's likely two that outrate the Warriors.

The Christchurch team does not exist. There's no point us discussing it like it exists when it doesn't. Sky wont be signing a 10 year deal which might include a Chch team in the future. They'll sign a deal for what is available now.

Cumulative is what tv companies pay for

Nrl was on par with super rugby a few years ago up till round ten or eleven. Given that’s one nz team vs five ? Nz teams that means warriors tv ratings would be higher then anyone else’s given the all Aussie games wouldn’t get similar numbers in nz

Over a full season and with rep games it crushes Union

Whatever the nz tv deal is it will be under ten percent of the total deal so it’s just a bonus

But obviously if sky want to pay more for another team that’s another advantage for Christchurch over Brisbane

If that's the case then Sky will pay more for the NRL than it does for rugby - do you think that's going to happen?

You got the references for this claim?

This is irrelevant to this discussion about Sky's deal.

This is at least 5 years away, there's no point discussing this in the context of this deal.

Nope league won’t go close to the union deal

But at half the nz union deal Theres a lot of value there

Like Australia the rights can be worth a lot but networks won’t pay for it

The comment about nz deal being tiny part of the total is it doesn’t really affect the ability of the nrl to fund one or two Kiwi teams it’s a nice bonus

“The One New Zealand Warriors’ matches are the most popular so far with the match against the Raiders on March 22 attracting an audience of 469,800 people with a further 63,800 viewers streaming on Sky Sport Now and Sky Go.[3]

The Warriors v Sharks match on March 8 was the second most popular with 461,100 people watching and more than 64,280 streaming while Warriors v Sea Eagles contest came in third with 433,800 people watching and nearly 74,500 streaming.“

There’s no doubt that the NRL is on a roll in terms of fan support, with interest in the competition increasing across all games, not just ones featuring the Warriors, although they naturally continue to command the largest audiences,” he said.“

I forgot to add the nrl will have more content with the two new teams and an extra game each week for sky nz with the two new expansion teams

And they will be talking to sky now about what value Christchurch brings for them

but I ask again … why does this mean they are going to pay more money ? If you are the only interested bidder when you are buying a house … you don’t bid against yourself to force the price up

Any gain in NZ TV money with NZ2 has to be considered in context to how small value it would have for Australian TV.

I read just fine, the absence of a competing bidder doesn't mean you don't have to pay fair market value. Sky and the NRL are both aware of what it's worth in subscribers, if Sky aren't willing to pay what it's worth then the NRL won't sell it to them.. they'll just offer it to Kiwis on their app and directly compete with Sky for subscriptions or just put it on free to air for free and drive up popularity and remove the need for people to subscribe to Sky.

And the NRL is worth significantly more than the previous deal in both volume and quality shown in every metric but what's more important is the trajectory because that's going to be the broadcast deal, this is forward looking and that paints an even brighter future!

So in the absence of another bidder, they are still bidding!
