Unfortunately for him, I don't think he ever really looked at what he had. He had his blinkers on and only focused on his game plan and wasn't interested in absolutely anything else whatsoever.

He, numerous times, told everyone that "We're an ugly team. We play ugly". He wanted the team to get down and dirty, grit their teeth, and grind out boring games. But we have Ponga, Young, Gagai, Best, Sharpe, Lucas, ect ... these are good players. Flashy players. He has been trying to get the team to play the opposite of their biggest weapons. The 10 weeks they were let off the leash: 10 week winning streak, Dally M, highest pointscoring team, ect.

For a number of years, Dad would frequently tell me that he didn't like AOB. Dad passed unexpectedly 2yrs ago, but he'd be a happy man today with this news if he was still here.

Personally, I've been frustrated at the way the team has played and, seemingly, coached. I haven't liked AOB's attitude at times, but I've genuinely wanted him to be the one who finally brings success to the Knights (outside of the womens team). For all the years of crap and frustration, to have gotten a premiership would have made all those infuriating weekends worth it. Now he's departing and we are not really any better for all those years of frustration and bitter disappointment.

He'll probably go on to being a successful assistant coach yet again. Maybe being involved in a 5th Grand Final. I wish him well, but I wish him the Knights level of success if he goes to another NRL club (ie: bringing that club down to spoon contenders!).

I just hope whomever steps into his role at Newcastle isn't going to be AOB 2.0 and we get a rinse and repeat for the next 4, 5, 6+ years.

Seems like Hannay is the front runner.

Tbh if I was a rookie coach GC would be team number 20 on my list of 18 NRL clubs. The biggest poisoned chalice in the game.
Damn right. I wonder if Peyton survived because Hannay was already sewn up a while back.

Admittedly the Cows have had a pretty ordinary injury run this year but there's been some very very odd things happen that are unrelated to injuries and directly related to motivation/skills.

If Fox can be trusted (which generally they can't), I hope the Knights go with Holbrook versus Green.

I mean outside of Green being another Moses client (like AOB) and just the drama that causes, I just don't see how it changes what hasn't been working for the club over the past few years.

Their roster makeup is relatievly screwed if the reported salaries for Ponga and Brown are accurate. If so 2 players are eating up 25% of the Knights slary cap space. Thta mean a lot less $ to spend on other players to fill out the roster. It'll take years beforev they can turn that around due to the rfemaining years on Ponga's contract, and the sheer length of Brown;s once it starts.

No matter who is coach, they arelly going to need some "bargain basement" players to really shine for any coach to be able to get them going well.

This is going to become the norm for a lot of clubs with more teams until the pathways to the NRL are fixed, and clubs learn to properly manage younger players again.

Until Payten realises his precious #1 isn't the answer along with these absolute plodders (KOD, Lawton, Vailea) he's brought into the club, we'll hut be a middle of the road bog average NRL club.

Hannay should be wearing a polo with cows horns on it in 2026.

Yeah, the problem with Drinkwater is the gap between his best and worst. I personally think the positives outweigh the negatives. There's a lot of passengers I'd show the door before Drinkwater.

An example of his best was the pass that cut out Valemei and Nanai to put Burns in the corner for the 26-28 with the kick to come. One of the best balls I've seen, from anyone, this year. And his beautiful sideline conversions for real clutch points.

The worst happened a couple of minutes before that, stopped to let a bomb bounce that he would've probably caught if he committed, which let the Tiges in for the try when it bounced pretty much down Naden's throat.

So Des is first coach sacked and AOB is first coach to walk... looks like we'll need two threads for 2026.
Dessie says he's not going to retire from coaching, but highly unlikely he will get another NRL club, but I guess he could be offered a Super League club

If Canberra win the premiership this year can we expect clubs to hold onto underperforming coaches for longer? There's also not a lot of coaches on the market at the moment.

Since a new coach always means a dead year or two rebuilding (at least) I like how coaches are generally getting longer terms before being punted

Hollbrook Brad Arthur Willie Peters Brian McDermott are head coach potential

The depth isn’t too bad these days

You figure the best option would be to get Holbrook (Roosters take back AOB), who seemed to want to have the Titans team playing attacking footy.

The hardest part will be getting all the pathways right, and that's something you need an older head for, and why Blake Green can't be the guy, I just can't see what he has actually done other than the guys like him.
