I really think a lot of the Raiders issues last night came down to coaching.
Stick is obviously a good motivator and has a good ability to create a siege mentality to get his side up, but tactically there were some horrible decisions last night:
- Trying to win by playing a grinding style of footy despite them being successful this year by attacking.
- Again too many hit ups in the oppositions end. There have always been some questions regarding the Sharks resilience and yet they play a style that makes it easy on them.
- Not replacing Strange with another half to take some pressure off Fogarty. They wouldn’t have won the MP this year without Fogarty, but now he’s probably going to be ripped from pillar to post for not being able to control and win the game all himself.
Stuart has been coaching for so many years now and still seems to have a special ability to sabotage his team when it counts.
We had a similar situation in 2008 when Ricky was coaching Cronulla. Brett Seymour tripped over a soccer ball at training and was a late withdrawal from the game. Ricky brought in a young Blake Green who was a half with big raps but little experience. He didn't perform and we got flogged. Green came back and managed to have a decent career, but probably didn't reach the levels expected- particularly in his early years.
That memory may have been bouncing around in Ricky's head.
