2025 Crowd Watch

Although I agree with what you say re: Ch7 or 10 wanting a night GF if they were to pick up the NRL FTA broadcasting rights in the future, how is it that even though there were two years during the COVID era (2020-21) where the AFL experimented with scheduling their Grand Final kickoff in primetime on the east coast of Australia (and unsurprisingly, Ch7 got large tv ratings), GF kickoff reverted back to the traditional 2:30pm Saturday afternoon start in 2022 (where it has remained since then)? Saturday night not so lucrative as Sunday night?

In terms of TV ratings, Saturday nights is the "dead zone" ratings wise. If you look, many of the worst rating shows are put in Saturday nights. So yes, from the financial perspective of an FTA network, Saturady night is not as lucrative financially as that is the night they charge the lowest for its advertising.

If it's at 8 pm, or 3 PM, the ratings will be the same.
The GF is a must watch anyway and always will be.
This is all about Channel 9 and the fact they don't want to miss out on even just one night's 6 PM news bulletin ratings.
PVL should just tell them to gagf, and decide what time he thinks is best for the fans and for the game.

The Broncos and Queensland deserves a stadium that could hold 100k. Queensland is the Rugby League capital of Australia and the World. They have the most members in the NRL and the biggest support ever and they need a refurbished stadium to entertain all their loyal fans.

At least 80k. Even 100k they would fill that for origin.

Not sure they could fit that in at the lang park site which is a big call moving away from there

Nrl would need to throw some grand finals up there plus Brisbane 3

I guess just relocate Castlemaine street west 50m or so, have a resumption of some commercial buildings and ~40 houses. Space problem solved

I would really like to see how large of a crowd the Warriors would draw at Eden Park for a one-off match such as on ANZAC Day or a week 3 preliminary final.
They used to open their season there from 2011 to 2013. Those 3 games drew 38,405; 37,503; 32,740. The rest of the season at Mt Smart averaged 13,842; 15,257; 13,160.
If they tried it again next year they'd surely fill Eden Park's standard 50k capacity.

Surely for events like the GF's they set bespoke ad rates. Damn sure it wouldn't cost the same to advertise on Origin night as a week before or after.

Anyone got the aggregate finals crowd record under a top 8 format and will it be broken this year ?

Maybe those prelims where they got 70k would’ve been the only years that matched this year even with a sharks home semi ?

353,401 from 2015, and no, max this year will be about 20k short of that.
2015 had 2 at Suncorp, nothing else over 36k before the GF.

Would you care to bet? Prime Time on FTA networks is when they charge premium rates for advertising, and that is the 6pm-10pm time slot. Why do you think FTA networks put on the shows they think are "ratings winners" during that time.

Nine's corporate mentality hasn't changed in relation to that. They will oppose having a day time GF for its own ratings/advertising purposes.

I'm merely pointing out my observations based on the little I know together with Nine's actions during its 33 years of coverage since they got the TV rights in 1992.

This doesn’t make sense to me. Surely for big events you’re charged less on the timeslot and more for the product itself. If the game was played earlier and the ratings were the same why would the advertisers pay less?

I understand for most products but for GF’s it doesn’t make sense IMO. If the Super Bowl was changed to another day or timeslot I’m pretty sure the amount they charge for advertising wouldn’t change.

Comparisons with US TV isn't quite valid. Different economies there, and they don't have restrictions on what subscription TV can broadcast like we do in Australia.

Also Nine looks at it from what works best for them. To them, maximising revenue from advertising on a Sunday night with an NRL Grand Final broadcast would be of great utility than from advertising on a Sunday afternoon with an NRL Grand Final. It also saves them the cost of having a "rating blockbuster" on that night by having a night time Grand Final instead of in the afternoon.

They can save that "blockbuster" show's episode to another might of the week, or the Sunday night after the Grand Final.
