Super league doesn’t happen without them either

They’ve always paid afl more for their tv deals from the money they underpay us

Foxsports is paying AFL 418 million pa and we outrate them by close to thirty percent

They currently pay us 250 million pa
All media companies will try and get the rights for as cheap as possible. The problem is you need other companies to bid to drive the price up.

The point I was making though was Fox backs up the NRL when they want to expand the game. Case in point Vegas. Nine on the other hand couldn't be f**ked sending a commentary team up there.

In all honesty a 9:30 kick off doesn't matter for TV, we've always watched origin at that time in NZ. It only really matters if you want kids attending the game.

Nine / Stan bidding against Foxtel will be a game changer

Foxtel has never had their rights tested

If they lose them Stan becomes number one overnight

Accessibility is how we grow the game. It's why a twilight Grand Final would be the best decision for the NRL. A 5:30 kickoff means 7:30 in NZ. It also opens up the possibility of playing a GF in Auckland in the future. Sometimes taking less money for accessibility is a good thing.

State of Origin on the other hand is primarily an event for NSW and QLD so a 7:30 kickoff is probably the best time for that. However if they are going to proceed with a game in NZ, it's important to be accessible to the population.
If it means an extra 200 to 250 million cash a year ?

Things like r360 or French union wouldn’t matter

Plus nines coverage is improving

Their gf preview show last night was excellent
The same Nine who promotes the AFL just as much as the NRL? I want a broadcaster who will both pay for the rights and invest in the game. The fact PVL wants games shown on the main channel in the AFL states mandatory in the next broadcast deal is a good thing.

I don't think a late kick off in NZ is a big deal. It'll still sell out twice over and rate it's tits off in NZ. Obviously it would be better if there was an alternative or a bigger compromise.

It's a massive win for NZRL anyway you look at it, it'll be a massive buzz for the game across NZ. Staying up late to watch the League in NZ is starting to be part of the culture anyway, especially given the GF is played at 11pm on a Sunday night..!
Hopefully that changes soon!
Sunday afternoon GF is gathering support and hopefully is implemented before the Warriors make it.
Origin will definitely sell out regardless of the time due to the even nature of it in NZ- not sure it will move the ratings needle much but will be a great.
Can’t wait for the grand final to move to a friendlier time slot, I thought I remembered the 2002 grand final being earlier but I can see it was 9pm NZ time slot- must have been a few beers deep by then…
2011 I didn’t remember being that late either but that was 7pm NZ time which is much more manageable than this years 9:30pm

Yeah, I think Gob is doing his usual getting a bit over excited about the impact this game will have. Staying up late to watch league has been the culture since TVNZ and Sky started playing the Winfield Cup games in the early 90s.

It used to be great in NZ when the GF was in the afternoon, although as I'm in Oz now the time doesn't matter that much. :)

Nailed it.

Middle of winter. Cold wet Auckland Wednesday. 9.30 probably the best time to be fair, atleast people might make kickoff with traffic etc 😂

For those who missed it, they briefly discussed a second NZ team during the game. Gould's view is that it must be based in Auckland to allow a game in the main city each week. His view is that it's not ready now, but will be in the future.

Can't say I agree with him but there you go. I personally think a second Auckland side would be successful. But there are other priorities and Christchurch (or Wellington if they ever got an appropriate stadium) would be higher priority.

Another team in Auckland would be crazy and smells like a Pacific Islander team.

2nd team in Auckland sounds not as mad after the NRL adds Christchurch and Wellington.

That's Gould having no idea about NZ really.

Why do you think a second Auckland side will be successful?
