600 million cash minimum.

Contra isn’t itrelevant when we’re talking tv deals since nobody talks what any other sport gets cash

What they got in the last deal isn’t relevant

It’s how much they outrate afl by and how much afl gets

Plus the market has improved since the afl did their deal

200 to 230 million extra tv cash will make a big difference to the salary cap and club grants too
It is largely, padding deals to look good with contra doesn’t help a code pay the bills.

there’s lots of factors that go into how a tv company will value sports rights. Afl got somewhere between $520-550mill tv cash avg a year. That’s the target as a pass for me. Over that he’s done well. Under that Vlad and Abdo need to go.

He has repeatedly told us it will be bigger than AFLs deal so I think he has set the bar at $550-$600 for tv rights and that is the pass mark after he screwed up the last deal during Covid

There should be a component in the next tv deal, starting in the last year or around 2031, where there are 2 GF days, if the NRL reserve grade gets off the ground.

GF Saturday would be STATE CHAMPIONSHIP at 5pm and NRLW at 7:30pm

GF Sunday would be NRL RESERVE GRADE at 2:30pm and NRL at 5pm

NRL RESERVE GRADE would take players from the NSW Cup more so then QLD Cup meaning the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP would be closer and less blow out scores

If national under 21's return, along with reserve grade, then the grand final schedule weekend could be something like:

Saturday: Allianz stadium
4pm- State championship game
7:30pm- NRLW grand final

Sunday: Accor stadium
1:20pm- National under 21's grand final
4pm- Reserve grade grand final
7:30pm- NRL grand final

We really need to get more to be a pass mark. We’re in such a stronger position than what they were when that deal was made. Our ratings have exploded, interest on social media is way up and our crowds are way up (looks better for advertisers IMO). We’re expanding adding new games and entering new markets. We’ve got a women’s game on the rise and a potential new big rating series with women’s origin.

There is so much going for the NRL right now. That’s not to say it will happen but to me that’s a pass mark.

That works but if we’re going for Sunday arvo/twilight GF’s, Saturday needs to have 3 games due to the heat during the day of we’re having earlier kick offs on Sunday

Seven could be poised to make an audacious play to wrestle the National Rugby League broadcast rights from rival Nine, with speculation that its proposed merger with Southern Cross Austereo could revive a secret plan to partner with US heavyweight NBCUniversal in a joint streaming venture.
Industry sources revealed Seven West Media spent months locked in negotiations with the global news and entertainment media giant three years ago about a prospective partnership that would see the nation’s then most-watched commercial network take carriage of NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service in Australia.
One executive familiar with the situation told The Australian the “high-end discussions” ultimately collapsed after NBCUniversal set strict limits on the level of influence SWM chairman Kerry Stokes would be able to exert over the proposed partnership if the deal were to go ahead.
“NBCUniversal said that to make it work, Stokes would have to reduce his holding in Seven West Media to 20 per cent and that the company would need to replace him with an independent chairman,” the Seven source said.
“That was a deal-breaker for NBCUniversal and a deal-breaker for Stokes and Seven too – and it effectively knocked the whole thing on the head.”
There are now whispers the concept could be revived if SWM’s proposed acquisition by Southern Cross – which owns the Triple M, Hit and 2DayFM radio networks as well as digital audio app LiSTNR – is successful. There is even speculation that NBCUniversal could make a play for the combined entity.

The merger, which would see Seven shareholders receive 0.1552 Southern Cross shares for every Seven West Media share, would see the combined entity conform with both of NBCUniversal’s previous caveats.
Under the merger proposal, the Stokes family’s ownership in Seven would be slashed from 40 per cent to 20 per cent, and the family patriarch would step down as chairman after 17 years at the helm, while his businessman son, Ryan, remained on the board.
Together, the two legacy media organisations will be valued at about $440m.
“That was what SWM was worth alone back when we were having discussions with NBCUniversal,” one Seven insider. “So I wouldn’t be surprised at all if both companies were bought up by the NBCU.”
The absence of a digital streaming partner in Seven’s arsenal has long been cited as one of its greatest weaknesses, and a massive chink in its armour when it came to war-gaming its future sports strategies.

“The problem is, Seven already has the free-to-air AFL rights and it really doesn’t have anywhere it can put the NRL that would make sense,” one insider said.
“They could put them on a digital channel, but doesn’t really compare to what Nine can offer, and it’s way too late in the game for Seven to try to build its own streaming service – they simply can’t afford to make the original content that would be required to get it off the (ground) now that the market has been flooded.
“Reviving the NBCUniversal deal would see them have control of a strong domestic product through the Peacock service but also be able to pitch the idea of taking the NRL to the world – and more importantly the US market – through Peacock.”
Another Seven executive confirmed the media merger could revive the network’s interest in making a play for at least some of the NRL’s most-watched games, including the finals series and the State of Origin, which topped the ratings each year, telling The Australian there were “plenty of ways (the games) could be divvied up”.
Even though the concept of taking carriage of the Peacock service collapsed in 2022, SWM has retained strong ties with NBCU and announced an international content-sharing deal from January 2023.

Under the multi-year agreement, Seven has been able to air select NBCU movies, scripted network and cable television dramas and comedies on its channels, as well as its digital catch-up service, 7Plus, and also launched a “new linear free-to-air and live-streamed channel”, 7Bravo, to carry the new content.
The network said programs to be broadcast on 7Bravo under the arrangement included Below Deck Down Under, Below Deck Adventure, The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip, The Real Housewives of Dubai, The Real Housewives of Miami, Love Without Borders, Southern Hospitality and Real Girlfriends in Paris, among others.
Seven’s then chief executive, James Warburton, touted the move as a “game-changer” for the network at the time.
“NBCUniversal is a global content powerhouse and the creator of some of the best-known and most-loved entertainment brands in the world, across television and film. We can’t wait to bring them and much more to Seven and 7plus,” he said.

I can’t see Foxtel losing the rights it would almost be the death knell for them. They will bid whatever it takes to get it - which is great news if 9 are serious about Stan getting the pay tv rights.

If I took a guess I’m imagining 9 retain FTA, Foxtel retain pay tv, 9 retain exclusive rights for origin and grand final, 10/paramount get Monday Night Football free to air and pay tv. Internationals … could be either 10 or 9.

This way the game is not supremely broken up on many channels - just Monday night football with 10 which adds some competition to 9. It strengthens nines position with the exclusives and have the same games as they do now. Allows nrl to maximise revenue without it detracting the customer experience of splitting the game up significantly.
I would love Stan to go hard at it to drive the price up, but I don't want them to win it. Firstly, because all games will then have Joey, Gus and Freddy dribbling on the commentary, secondly, because RL people subscribing en mass to Stan will help the Rugby Union ratings and I want them to continue to rot away on Stan without assistance from the NRL coming on board.

“The NRL, on the back of Reece Walsh and the Broncos, has cemented its place as the number one sport in the country - and ARLC Chair Peter V’landys let the AFL know about it.

News Sport Network

NRL: NRL CEO Andrew Abdo joined Fox Sports News to discuss the success of the 2025 Grand Final and what could be implemented in the future.
The AFL’s claim to be the country’s premier winter sport lasted one week. On Sunday night at Accor Stadium - and more pointedly in lounge rooms around the country - rugby league blew their rivals out of the water.
Left the AFL grand final in their wake as Brisbane ended a 19-year drought and the NRL smashed their grand final ratings record.
The Broncos’ win over Melbourne capped a momentous season in which rugby league was a ratings juggernaut. The longer the season went, the more ammunition the code was given as they prepare to ramp up talks with broadcasters over a deal beyond 2027.
The Broncos 26-22 win reached a national audience of 6.409 million people and an average audience of 4.46 million people - up 33 percent on last year.
The match also smashed streaming records with an audience of 1.316 million. The AFL’s decider a week earlier between Brisbane and Geelong reached 6.4 million people and a national total TV audience 4.18 million.
Reece Walsh and the Broncos helped smash all the ratings records.
Reece Walsh and the Broncos helped smash all the ratings records.
ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys was understandably chuffed with the ratings result and couldn’t resist taking a swipe at the AFL.
“The way they (the AFL) have treated us is they have always looked down on us,” V’landys said.
“They have never taken us seriously. We have shown them that they need to take us seriously because we are serious.
“The numbers are showing that now. For someone that was laughing at us, it’s the reverse now. I am proud of the fact that rugby league has lifted so much to be doing what it is now.”
The ratings record arrived at the perfect time for the NRL - they are poised to ramp up broadcast negotiations in coming months as they look to secure a record-breaking deal that gazumps the AFL.
Loading embed...
“The results are going to be hard to beat in the future,” V’landys said.
“We have to look at doing things better. We have to keep innovating. Our players are doing the right thing.
“Players like Kaeo Weekes and Ethan Strange are coming through. They are going to keep coming. Of course we have the big guns like Reece Walsh and Nathan Cleary.
“The ability and skill of the players is like never before. It’s all about entertainment. We’re in the entertainment business.
“Success breeds success. The big one we need to get now is the bog oak tree called broadcast. That’s the final icing on the cake.”

I read somewhere that Ten`s technology wasn`t up to it, by that I assumed they didn`t have the tech to broadcast the game that would be comparable to other broadcasters and of a standard desirable to the NRL.
If that could be fixed then League might just be the answer to Ten`s on-going relevancy problem.
Could they do a deal to take the simulcast feed?
