I'd definitely be all for a 65k+ robust upgrade of Suncorp if it can be done. Would be an amazing result for rugby league and Qld.

If it happens before 2032 as implied by the minister, then where would broncos and dolphins play in the mean time? I'd assume the ground can't be used. The only logical place would be the Gabba I suppose. Would take a hit for a year, but it might be even more than a year.

This proposal would be closer to 1b than 300m I would think.

if i had to guess broncos for most of their games say 10 out of 12 at gabba. maybe 2 on the goldie at cbus. girls broncs would play at easts tigers ground.

phins would be 5 at kayo, 3 at gabba, 2 at sunny coast, maybe 2 at cbus as well?

cbus is pretty under used with only 1 team using it.

maybe magic round for that 1 year in perth? sydney? melbourne?

I explained this earlier this year. The Western grand stand is the most complex of the lot. It houses all the critical infrastructure that keeps the stadium operating. You touch that, you essentially knock the stadium out indefinitely until a new grand stand is built in its place.

None of it is impossible of course but we are talking about a fair amount of money to temporarily displace stadium operation services ie Energex transformers, Fire Pump Rooms, Mechanical Operations Room, Main Water and Sewer Lines etc etc.

There was no fully enclosed roof. Just a wider roof awning that captured all the seating areas and touch lines. The field itself would remain open.

It must be stated though that there is 2-3 different feasibility reports and ultimately the general thinking is that the final approval will be a mash up of all.

If a roof becomes part of it then it no longer becomes a simple reconfiguration scope and costs begin to creep up.
whats ya gut feel with how it'll play out? is one of the feasbilities reports something you helped work on?

how long ya reckon design and construction will takes?

Only 6 years to go, that'll go quick. 6 years ago panthers hadnt started their run, nek minnit they won a shitload. time flies.

As I live in Brisbane. I don't know if I could handle all the Bronco's supporters being all high and mighty for years on end if they went on a tear and won multiple comps in a row.

The 90s in Sydney with Broncos supporters being dicks was enough. Being surrounded by them would be even worse.

This is all pretty pie-in-the-sky stuff until it can be confirmed that any significant development can take place without touching the existing foundations, given that the majority of the services infrastructure runs along Castlemaine Street.

You don’t need to touch the foundations. The stadium was built with provisions in its 4 corners to continue going up and gap fill.

The most significant work would be removing the existing awning structural steel support columns and instead of having them come through internally, they are repositioned and rebuilt externally. If a new awning roof is part of the final design then this is likely the approach.

There are pylons already in the ground for this to happen including on the ICB side.

I'd love to see a retractable roof as well as an upgrade to 65k. Obviously cost is the big factor here but that would put a lot of pressure on the NSW government to do something to Accor.

Four-time Dally M Medallist Johnathan Thurston has backed calls for an expanded Suncorp Stadium, saying the venue should seat 70,000.
Thurston famously declared “North Queensland deserves a new stadium” after the Cowboys’ famous 2015 premiership victory.
The $318m, 25,000-seat Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville opened in 2020.
Now the rugby league legend has thrown his support behind a bigger Brisbane venue.
“I was at the ground for their (Broncos) last home final ... the atmosphere was one of the best I’ve been a part of, so hopefully the Premier is listening, and hopefully the people of Queensland will support more seats,” Thurston said.
Thurston said he would like to see an extra 20,000 seats at The Cauldron.
“To attract world-class events, it would be good to get another 20,000 there, to become 70,000,” he said.
Johnathan Thurston dominated the Origin arena at Suncorp Stadium.

“Queensland is growing, people are moving up here because we are the greatest state in the nation and they can see why they’re moving here.
“To attract world class events, we need to make sure that we got world-class stadiums.”
Broncos captain Adam Reynolds replicated Thurston’s famous moment when he used his grand final speech in Sydney to demand Suncorp Stadium be expanded.
“To the Premier, build a bigger stadium because we sold that one (Suncorp Stadium) out and we’ll sell it out again,” Reynolds said.
David Crisafulli responded just 17 hours later, revealing Suncorp Stadium’s 52,500-seat capacity would be lifted and the venue’s standard improved to support an expected boom in support for the Brisbane Broncos and ensure the state shines in 2032.

At a media conference on Tuesday, Mr Crisafulli said the government had been working on a stadium upgrade plan for the past few months, focusing on capacity, accessibility and quality.
But he wouldn’t put an “arbitrary” figure on how many new seats might be created.
“I was asked about whether or not I think there is the opportunity to improve the capacity there and the answer is yes, the things that I’ve been working on in recent months tells me that there are, there’s the opportunity to get some extra seating, including pretty good quality stuff as well,” he said.
Mr Crisafulli said the government would not build a new rectangular stadium but instead upgrade the “spiritual home of rugby league”. And he said would not discuss the potential costings.
“That work’s happening at the moment and you guys (The Courier-Mail) have led a good campaign on that,” the Premier said.
“This was built for the 2003 World Cup in this phase and the truth is, it really hasn’t had a great deal of love for over 20 years.
“We have to bring it into the 21st century and we have to improve its standard and its capacity.”
Mr Crisafulli said the work would happen before the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where it would take a starring role alongside other venues.
But he would not say whether the upgrades would be included in the $7.1bn funding envelope for Games venues.
“It’d be a great legacy as part of the Games, but it’s more … the Olympic and Paralympics is a very small part of it,” he said.
“We haven’t been in government a long time but it’s something I’ve wanted to do.”
Mr Crisafulli said his government had a “real” vision to be the events capital of the nation.
“I see an upgrade to Suncorp as just been a part of that mix for events, for the Origin, for the Broncos, for the Roar for everyone who wants to use it for concert promoters, but it’ll be done in a way that is calm and measured and methodical, but in terms of a finish line, it’s got to be done by 2032 because it’s a real opportunity for us to show up on the world stage.”

Australian Rugby League Commissioner Peter Beattie, who as Queensland Premier oversaw the 2003 Suncorp Stadium revamp, said the venue’s capacity needed to reach 65,000 seats.
“It would also present a genuine threat to the Sydney grand final dominance,” he said.
“It would force the NSW Government to address the shortcomings at Accor or risk losing the game’s showpiece.”
Mr Beattie said the upgrade could be done by adding new tiers, reconfiguring concourses and upgrading the roof to “guarantee Queensland’s future as a globally-competitive sporting and entertainment centre”.
He said adding a roof would cement Suncorp Stadium’s dominance as Australia’s only rectangle weather protected stadium.

“A roofed 65,000-seat stadium would present Brisbane to the world as a forward-thinking city attracting events which Sydney and Melbourne could not easily match,” Mr Beattie said.
“It would also ensure Queensland maintains its place as Australia’s rugby league capital, and the best place in Australia to watch rugby union internationals and soccer.
“The Olympics in 2032 need to leave real legacies which survive the test of time. If done properly, an upgraded Suncorp Stadium affords Queensland that opportunity.”
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner backed a stadium upgrade, telling ABC Radio on Tuesday there was a definite need.
“It’s a great stadium, and you want to keep the vibe of Suncorp alive. It’s not just about sports either. It’s about concerts and a whole range of other events, so there’s a lot of different events that can benefit from this.”

This won’t be a 6 month project, it won’t cost peanuts and it’s how they navigate the commercial aspects with their tenants if the stadium is down for 12+ months.
If they do the roof piece you mentioned in a later post - how long would you think Lang Park would be offline for?

So now it's 70k? The problem with Suncorp just like the Gabba is its landlocked.

I hope Suncorp does become a 65,000 seater stadium. Peter Beattie is one that needs to push for the upgrade. He was a former Premier of the state. You can't expect PVL and Abdo to do everything, otherwise what is the point of the commission.

If Suncorp gets the official green light for an upgrade, then most likely, Beattie should be given credit.

If they do the roof piece you mentioned in a later post - how long would you think Lang Park would be offline for?
It can probably be done in 9 months after design approval - offline time.

That would include a solid design (with no changes),
competent principal contractor (ie Watpac),
competent engineers (ie ARUP or WSP),
top notch structural steel subcontractor (ie BSF),
minimal union disruptions,
consistent weather,
no unforeseen latent conditions under the surface (ie poor structural maintenance).

12 + months (ie 15 months) would be a far more realistic target though.

As always, thanks and really appreciate your insight.

One season at the Gabba isn’t so bad when the end product is a 60-65,000 seat upgrade - lining it up with when CRR opens would be ideal

Glad that a suncorp redevelopment is finally gaining traction, it's just infuriating that nrl clubs have to win the damn comp before the ball gets rolling.
Meanwhile the afl gets an absolute lotto win of a stadium in brisbane with barely any fuss raised. Imagine how many schools, roads and hospitals could be improved with even half of their $4B stadium....

With an extra 13,000 people, I hope any redevelopment comes with upgrading pedestrian access to Roma Street. I believe it was supposed to be included in the original 2003 redevelopment, but it got scrapped.
Just another in a very long line of Queensland Labor broken promises.

We need the Raiders to win a grand final and for Joe Tapine to come up to the stage declaring " Canberra needs a new stadium!"

All sounds pretty promising regarding Suncorp. Common sense that the premier stadium in Queensland gets some love with all the cash they’ll be splashing on the Olympics.

Hopefully it can end up with 60-65k capacity and improved access and facilities/amenities.
