New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

NZ 2 in Auckland would just cannibalise the Warriors, in fact it’d be just like when the Hunter Mariners started up in Newcastle- a team no one wants. Race based isn’t the answer either, Moana Pasifika syndrome.
If Wellington is too small then Christchurch is too small, both cities are essentially the same size and Wellington has a much larger satellite population in closer proximity, Wellington has more of a city set up whereas Christchurch has more of a rural hub set up-but in time both could work and CHCH has a better chance to form a distinct personality apart from the Warriors.
Another team in Auckland screams of pasifika which like you say would be a disaster for both clubs.

christchurch sets up an immediate north v South Island rivalry as well as an already established Auckland v Christchurch rivalry in rugby union.

Christchurch will be perfect, there's 1 million people on the south island and they capture a few anti Auckland supporters too.
NZ has this thing where everyone outside Auckland hate Auckland - Jafa's , so a team outside of Auckland will create a bigger rivalry than an inner Auckland one would.
Auckland is the big smoke in NZ but if you spend much time there, you won't find many Aucklanders or NZnders or people who speak English!
It's a very high immigration population that don't vibe on Rugby league and Why the Wahs still play at a 25k stadium.
I'm not saying it can't work but there's better options and until the Warriors have had to move to Eden Park and average 35k , is put it on the back burner.
Aucklands pretty much in the same boat as Sydney and tends to be the first port of call for those wanting to migrate into the country. Sydney would still have the higher percentage of overseas born from my experience

Never heard of the kid but those that have followed his progress are excited. Be one of the first times we’ve targeted his particular position which given how few and far between or halves prospects are I’m always shocked we haven’t gone to that particular well much sooner.
Only thing that’s a bit concerning is we likely would have had to give him a top 30 spot to entice him over when he’s very green to league

He’s regarded as the #1 talent in schoolboy RU.

KIWI ORIGIN

As revealed by this masthead a fortnight ago, the NRL is on the verge of a landmark announcement – State of Origin making its debut in New Zealand in 2027.

The New Zealand government has a $70 million war chest to bring sporting events across the ditch and they want State of Origin. Talks are in the advanced stage with the NRL, NZ tourism chiefs and Origin’s rights holders Channel 9 thrashing out a kick-off time at the proposed venue, Auckland’s Eden Park.

V’landys confirmed Origin is poised to head overseas for the first time in 40 years since their American exhibition at Los Angeles in 1987.

“It’s close to happening, yes,” V’landys said.

“Origin in New Zealand is another new idea we’re looking at.

“We will keep trying new things to grow our audience and the one thing we have the AFL doesn’t is international appeal.

“We will keep growing. If New Zealand is the growth area, we will attack. It will mean more revenue for the game.

“Origin in New Zealand would rate the house down. We want to do it, but we just need to overcome some hurdles with broadcasters and time restrictions.

“Once we get through those, I’m confident it will happen.”
One stickler for the public is the elephant in the room of NZ being one of only 2 nations not eligible for origin. The NZRL ceo was on NZ media this week very much a “it’s either everyone or no one” stance- the disadvantage the kiwis get to their player base is a sore point amongst many nzers

Auckland council have pushed to move the Warriors to Eden park a few times and it’s always met with massive opposition and seen as playing second fiddle to union as well as the tradition and history the warriors have at mt smart.

It’d be comparable to say parramatta being asked to move to Accor
Before the upgrade to Parramatta stadium the Eels absolutely should have moved to Accor stadium.

I think that'll be sorted out before 2027. I think most have come to understand the full picture, we just need to pull the trigger.

Probably best not to believe the media overhype, he was the second 10 in one of the worst NZ schools teams (they lost to the Maori team, a team that selects it's players after the schools team is selected) ever selected .. although this year's lot was worse.

He is (was) a talented 10, but he wasn't selected for the NZ U20s this year.

While I don't care about Origin, so don't care about it going to NZ, if it changes the eligibility rules to allow other nations as well as PIs to benefit then I'm all for it.

Yep.

He'll need some seasoning in adult footy too.

I'm unsure whether he has a league background or if he's learning that from scratch too. Apparently (according to a guy on a rugby forum who knows lots about schoolboy rugby) the other guy from Nelson College who has gone to to Souths is a leaguie. The forum guy was surprised when he initially decided to play rugby. But he hasn't said anything about Inch.

How many Kiwis would be Origin eligible though? Unless we are referring to NZ born Tongan and Samoan players that could now choose NZ instead of Australia like Isaiya Katoa, but those players seem pretty locked in to their Island nation now.

Ponga, toia, howarth, weekes??

no doubt there’s dozens more potential origin selections in the jersey flegg, SG ball and Harold mats comps.

This is the brains behind the chch orcas bid

Shows why the nrl werent interested in their bid
Bro!! What a douche ! Thank fxck he isn't involved!
That statement rules him out of any position administrating NRL at any level for life!

Is this a way to lash out at the NRL for being overlooked?

I think the NRL will push ahead with a model that is being used for Perth, why risk it with these fools?
They'll leverage the Brisbane 3 bid to get the NZ government to the table ( already establishing a relationship with the Origin concept) they'll probably get 100 million by that time, run it for a few years and sell it.

The problem lies in that it’s geared against NZ for players that are also PI eligible
Fair points.

I hope they open Origin up to everyone, provided they meet Origin eligibility

At the risk of watering down origin ? Nope

Kiwis already have a massive base of players to pick from

It’s their fault they chose Stacey jones as coach when Madge wanted to continue as kiwis coach whilst coaching origin

Hughes for example playing half back for qld would be ridiculous

They literally smashed Australia in the final a few years ago under the current system
