I posted in the PNG thread in the expansion forum about the Senator asking these questions on behalf of Rugby Union, with video of the estimates exchange:

She may or may not have links to union, but her socials certainly indicate a keen interest in the sport.
You would think penny wong would’ve known the govt is funding the Fiji super rugby team and have answered as such rather than just looking clueless

Federal ministers are not across every contract in their departments. That's an enormous amount of detail not required to be known by ministers.

That's the job of the bureaucrats.

Committee members often come with obscure questions relating to one contract or another. These will often be pre-packaged by community orgs or businesses with an axe to grind.

Like Rugby Australia.

This way the opposition senator gets to make a minister look partially foolish and the organisation gets their question heard. It's a cosy arrangement that is not always in the public interest.

Really think the arl should’ve bought seven

Current valuation of 208 million is within their cash reserves

Could even have gone in with a partner and then developed a streaming / pay tv network attached

Fox sold recently for a valuation of 3 billion or so and much of that value comes from nrl tv ratings

Could’ve been a game changer for the game

That would be hilarious watching aussie rules types squirm as their game's broadcasters are suddenly owned by the NRL.

It'd also be funny watching if PVL chose to start toying with them. Putting games on after 10pm instead of live, less promotions of their sport, putting NRL shows on, ect.

Commercially, it'd be dumb to devalue an expensive product and probably one of Ch7's biggest money-earners ... but it would still be funny to me!

It would be more hilarious the NRL paying the AFL to broadcast their games and at an inflated price based on what some posters on here think the AFL rights are worth.

Absolutely nothing wrong with “NRL”. Works for the NBA. It’s also a hugely popular brand with international appeal would be silly to change it.
Agreed, there is nothing particularly wrong with it.
I am suggesting changing the name of the sport (to Pacific Football) not the competition but I think it would make a lot of sense to change the comp name to NPFL (National Pacific Football League) if we change the sport name.
Get Rugby out of the name of the sport.
