14 Team SL and Merged Championship?

Should be top 5, with 6th and 7th playing midweek for the last spot.

1 and 2 go through to week 2
3 plays the winner of 6 and 7
And 4 plays 5
Fails to keep the interest alive for mid table clubs. You can’t cut out 9 clubs of 14 from end of season interest!

nrl has has top 8 from 16 then 17 clubs for years and no one complains. SL has had top 6 from 12, basically same.

Going top 7 from 14 would make most sense, giving the number 1 team the first week off also brings more value to the lls.

When a club like the Bradford Bulls is admitted to Super League with an embarrassement of a ground and an undersize pitch who finished 3rd in a 2nd tier competition Super League has problems.
If they get back up to 10k crowds and competing for trophies you’re going to look a bit silly lol
stadium aside they are the club with best potential to do that outside SL.

I seriously doubt if they will get that as an average, as a lot of fans of other clubs will boycott Odsal due to the state of the terraces.

Not unusual for nrl teams to be in the 8 on 12 or 13 wins of 24 games. Some people just like a whinge.

Oh Perth, you silly, silly sausage.

The last 10 NRL 8th place sides (wins/losses);

Roosters - 13/11
Knights - 12/12
Raiders - 13/11
Raiders - 14/10
Titans - 10/14
Sharks - 10/10 *Covid year*
Broncos - 11/12
Warriors - 15/9
Cowboys - 13/11
Titans - 11/12

So, let’s look at the evidence here Perthy. In a total of 10 completed seasons, only THREE sides have a record of getting in the play-offs with a negative record. It is in fact, unusual for sides to get in the eight with a negative record.

In my model 6 and 7 are still in play

The problem with 14 is there is so little to play for, for all sides. Jeopardy and suspense is almost immediately removed. The race for 8th automatically becomes a “which turd will rise to the top” and takes away from the top sides as much as it tries to keep things interesting for fans of other clubs.

As I’ve repeated, it’s just so poorly thought out and it’s just a rehash of what we have done before, what didn’t work before and haven’t changed this time around. I’d be angry about it but I’m apathetic to it now and I think that’s sadder than being angry. What’s the point? The same chairmen that voted in 14 teams last time around, who then voted it out a couple of years later, who voted it back in a few months ago will be the same group of chairmen that will probably vote it out again in a couple of years time when the same issues we had last time - poor quality of games, a drop in standard of the comp, a bloated and uncompetitive play-off structure - occur again.

Some joined up thinking and a plan to create a competitive competition works, doing what we’ve done before and hoping that this time it magically works and Bradford magically become the Bradford of the 90’s is whimsical and ridiculous.

6 works fine. The mechanics of it, where there is no real advantage of finishing 1st to 2nd, is where it needs working on but 6 works well for us as a comp and really should have stuck.

So what that some teams have nothing to play for? That’s their fault for not winning enough games to be in the play-offs. We got obsessed for a spell with “every minute matters”, where we tried to create all sorts of jeopardy with the eight in the play-offs, the Super 8’s and the whole “Club Call” spell. We got all gimmicky and embarrassing to try and create drama and jeopardy when, if you do things right, you don’t need to force these things and it feels a bit like that. Again.

I think a Top 7 system with the League Leaders shield getting a first round bye like the NFL in their conference playoffs would be perfect and really give a point of difference to winning the LLS.

It also feels like an 'authentic award' for the team finishing first in a competition with no loop fixtures plus gives more prestige to the LLS.

Totally agree. That is the most logical play off number and way of running it.

So 8 of those 10 years is what I said lol. You spent a long time agreeing with me there!

Just give up, you look daft. Teams with negative records make for 3 out of the last 10 8th placed finishes.

If you think no team making the 8 in Super League’s 14 team history with a positive record is good for the sport, you’re just a parody at this point and arguing things for the sake of it.

It's dumb but it's not the end of the world. NRL ran top 8 from 14 and 15 for years and the sky didn't fall.

Ditching the IMG criteria and going back to P&R would be far more catastrophic

And it's extra funds for the games, and generally play off games gets people off the coach to support there clubs. I don't see a big problem with it. It's what the game needs, and as long as the top 4 get a bonus for being there, it can only help the game.

I think in Super League the early finals games have been pretty poor crowd showings historically tbh. But if nothing else it keeps a few more eyes clinging on in hope of a miracle. I'm definitely in favour of retaining top 6 for competitive reasons but it won't actually damage the sport in any real way.

I enjoyed all the finals matches I saw. I wish Kayo would do minis of those matches as well. I think that would expand the audience for it a little more.
