No argument from me about that. And PVL and the rest of the ARL should be congratulated for where they have taken the game and placed it in such a strong position.
But lets not intimate that it's only the AFL that talk about crowds when there is a dedicated thread here with thousands of posts with posters asking for tickets sales updates and discussing sellouts. Or that the reason PVL doesn't compare AFL crowds with NRL crowds is because we don't kowtow to anyone when the reason is that average league crowds are about half the AFL. And I agree with PVL's strategy, he always discusses tv viewer numbers when comparing with the AFL, to compare crowds is silly when your opposition has higher numbers.
Talking up TV ratings and highlighting the fact that NRL is most watched sport in the Pacific is where you want to be while in the process of broadcast negotiations.. and we are in direct competition with the AFL for that same broadcast dollar.
So that is the most important metric by far to boast about and compete for is ratings.
Crowds are the AFL'S thing, always has been.
We don't compete with them on that.
In the same way they don't compete with us on SOO or internationals or being heterosexual - those are our things.
But we can certainly be excited when our crowds are doing well! Especially because it's never really been a thing for us.
I was watching an old test at the SCG ( yes a shitty oval, obviously not our thing right!) between Australia and NZ - the crowd was spars, 6k I think was announced..
Today we're looking at 45k between Samoa and Tonga!
So yes we have an entire thread dedicated to it and it has nothing to do with the AFL..
