Mental Health

Day 5 following surgery and I feel far better than the last 2 operations beforehand. If I catch infection again I going back in for an op and colostomy back for 3 months which I am really scared about.

So far so good though!
Excellent.

I read somewhere once that we spend 95% worrying about stuff we really don’t need to.

When you think about, worrying is at its best when you can draw something constructive from it, otherwise it’s just a burden.

So I guess you go with the flow.

Thanks for the updates, I’m about to go to the shops. I’m not expecting to experience any physical pain at all, which is really fortunate when I consider your challenges. I’m not even going stress over the idiots drivers I’m going to encounter to get there!

It’s worth reflecting on good health etc. A lot of people don’t find some solace in the day to day without chronic pain etc. Maybe we should!

Fingers crossed for no infection. That hospital-contracted MRSA/golden staph infection can be a real bastard.

I've had friends and family members with experience of colostomy bags (permanent), and while inconvenient it's something that they gradually learned to live with and hasn't prevented them from anything in life. Hopefully you are spared from a further op or any need for a temporary colostomy bag, with an infection-free recovery.

You are absolutely spot on. If you’ve got your health, you are a wealthy man. I’ve gone 44 years without serious illness before and am lucky to say I’m fit and healthy . Being taken out of action and your little kids don’t understand is hard.

But fingers crossed I’ll be back in no time and early signs are good. Currently planning the great Australian road trip to the Gold Coast for early next year in celebration because I can’t think of anything more exciting atm!

Cheers,
Stevie

Thanks man yeah they are nasty. Mine however is a result of where is it (in bowels) so you’ve continually got waste going through it.

The idea of a colostomy bag over summer (or anytime) is awful but the nurse gave me a timely reality check and said “well IF you do need one to heal, count yourself lucky you have options, many people don’t” which promptly made me get a grip as lots are less fortunate.

PS The new Prince Of Wales Hospital is incredible, I can’t think of better spending than in hospitals.

It's good that people see his speech as relatable.

Key points ? Stop and smell the roses. He colloquializes techniques in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) about choosing what to think and to challenge thoughts. He also urges to see others with empathy and resist the solipsism of adult life - don't be a merkin.

The speech was delivered in 05.

RIP.

Hey Guys,

I’ve got some very positive news to share. Aside from the fact I am almost back to normal health, which is amazing btw. Another week I think I’ll forget the whole last 3 months.

But in my time away from work I’ve really been thinking a lot about mental health at work, and what people go through, and how I can help.

My results for surveys for my team around psychological safety, support from your leader etc are the highest in our organisation and I have now been asked to co steer the mental health working group with leaders from right across the business. I’m actually thrilled because my team, and my wider team (their staff) often come to me as I obviously seem like a safe space to talk to.

The idea is for me to become a sponsor of the group and effectively be known as someone who a person can grab and ask for a chat. My role in that sense is to simple help them to get the help they need and just listen in the moment. But I’m visible, I’m available and I’m here for a chat if you would like.

Our work is a huge organisation (tens of thousands of employees) and I am able to help roll out constant understanding and support with your mental health journey. I’ll share much of mine too.

I’m feeling super proud and when the time is right I’ll definitely reference this thread evolving into what it is to highlight it’s not just waffle. Mental health is super important and investing in your headspace is always a good thing.

Awesome stuff Stevie - on your health front, and the broader workplace mental health role / recognition.

It’s a two way street Stevie.

I think your acknowledgment of those of us trying to make our feeble but well meaning attempts to help you in some way was greatly appreciated by us. Positive feedback from someone in your dire circumstances was quite nice to receive.

The nurse was right.

I wouldn’t usually quote Ray Hadley but he was interviewed once and said when he’s in a dip and down, he would think of people in far worse situations than him and somehow that would make him feel better.

And before anyone cuts into him, he added that he felt guilty feeling like that.

One day he slagged off my brother in law on the wireless but my brother in law said he couldn’t care less lol.

No, he wasn’t flogging invisible insulation to retirees, he was a state official.
